The true vision and the true knowledge of what we seek consists precisely in not seeing, in an awareness that our goal transcends all knowledge. 

St. Augustine (354–430 • Algeria)

St-AugustineSt. Augustine, regarded as one of the towering intellectual geniuses in history, wrote more than a thousand works on philosophy, psychology, theology, history, political theory, and other subjects. His Confessions, from which the following passage is taken, has remained a popular and influential work for almost 1,600 years.

I entered into the innermost part of myself. . . . I entered and I saw with my soul’s eye (such as it was) an unchangeable light shining above this eye of my soul and above my mind. . . . He who knows truth knows that light, and he who knows that light knows eternity. Love knows it. O eternal truth and true love and beloved eternity!

And I often do this. I find a delight in it, and whenever I can relax from my necessary duties I have recourse to this pleasure. {I experience] a state of feeling which is quite unlike anything to which I am used — a kind of sweet delight which, if I could only remain permanently in that state, would be something not of this world, not of this life. But my sad weight makes me fall back again; I am swallowed up by normality.

St. Gregory the Great (540–604 • Italy)

St-Gregory-GreatBorn into an eminent Roman family and heir to a large fortune, Gregory decided to become a monk. After he became Pope at the age of 50, he devoted himself to social causes, the first pope especially known for doing so. He reformed the mass and introduced the ritual plainsong known today as the Gregorian chant. He was also a noted theologian. His book, Morals on Job, from which the following passage is taken, influenced religious thought for centuries.

The mind of the elect . . . is frequently carried away into the sweetness of heavenly contemplation; already it sees something of the inmost realities as it were through the mist . . . it feeds on the taste of the unencompassed Light, and being carried beyond self, disdains to sink back again into self. . . .

Sometimes the soul is admitted to some unwonted sweetness of interior relish, and is suddenly in some way refreshed when breathed on by the glowing spirit.

When this is in any way seen, the mind is absorbed in a sort of rapturous security; and carried beyond itself, as though the present life had ceased to be, it is in a way remade in a certain newness [it is refreshed in a manner by a kind of new being . . . ]. There the mind is besprinkled with the infusion of heavenly dew from an inexhaustible fountain.

Johannes Tauler (1300–1361 • France)

Johannes Tauler was one of the most influential German spiritual writers of the 1300s. Martin Luther honored Tauler as a primary influence, and Tauler has exerted a profound influence on religious thought ever since. As one scholar remarked, “Tauler presents the Christian tradition in its purest form.”

The soul has a hidden abyss, untouched by time and space, which is far superior to anything that gives life and movement to the body. Into this noble and wondrous ground, this secret realm, there descends that bliss of which we have spoken. Here the soul has its eternal abode. Here a man becomes so still and essential, so single-minded and withdrawn, so raised up in purity, and more and more removed from all things. . . . This state of the soul cannot be compared to what it has been before, for now it is granted to share in the divine life itself.

St. Teresa of Avila (1515–1582 • Spain)

St-teresa-avilaSt. Teresa was one of the greatest women of the Roman Catholic church. Her books are considered masterpieces. St. Teresa initiated the Carmelite Reform, which restored the original contemplative character of the Carmelite order. In 1970 she was Doctor of the Church — one of just 33 individuals, and the first woman, to be so honored by the Catholic church.

My soul at once becomes recollected and I enter the state of quiet or that of rapture, so that I can use none of my faculties and senses. . . .

Everything is stilled, and the soul is left in a state of great quiet and deep satisfaction.

From this recollection there sometimes springs an interior peace and quietude which is full of happiness, for the soul is in such a state that it thinks there is nothing that it lacks. Even speaking — by which I mean vocal prayer and meditation — wearies it: it would like to do nothing but love. This condition lasts for some time, and may even last for long periods.

Thomas Merton (1915–1969 • United States)

After completing a masters degree in English at Columbia University in New York, Merton entered the Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani, in Kentucky, as a monk. He was later ordained as a priest. He published more than 15 books of spiritual writings, poetry, fiction, and essays, and participated in movements for social justice and peace. He took great interest in the religions of the East, particularly Zen, for the light they shed on the depth of human consciousness. From the seclusion of the monastery, he exerted a worldwide influence.

In the following passage Merton describes the experience of “contemplation.” He uses the term not in the current sense (thinking intently about something) but in its older sense, to describe the experience of transcending thought:

The utter simplicity and obviousness of the infused light which contemplation pours into our soul suddenly awakens us to a new level of awareness. We enter a region which we had never even suspected, and yet it is this new world which seems familiar and obvious. The old world of our senses is now the one that seems to us strange, remote and unbelievable. . . .

A door opens in the center of our being and we seem to fall through it into immense depths which, although they are infinite, are all accessible to us; all eternity seems to have become ours in this one placid and breathless contact. . . .

You feel as if you were at last fully born.

A technique for transcending

Readers who practice the Transcendental Meditation technique will recognize in these passages clear descriptions of transcending — the natural phenomenon of mental activity settling down, like waves settling on an ocean. Consciousness reaches its most silent state, serene and unbounded. We experience pure consciousness. We realize that this is our true Self, beyond time and space, infinite and eternal.

History of the 13-Month Calendar The 13-month calendar was devised by Auguste Comte in 1849. It was based on a 364-day year which included the one or two "blank" days that Abbé Mastrofini, an Italian Roman Catholic priest, had devised 15 years before. Each of the 13 months had 28 days and exactly four weeks.

This "Positivist" calendar, however, was so belabored with names of prominent men and women from ancient to modern times that it received a cold response. About the beginning of the twentieth century, the plan was revived by Moses B. Cotsworth who eliminated the superfluous names, thereby simplifying the plan. The new thirteenth month was designated "Sol."

This perpetual calendar, better known in the United States as the Eastman plan, met with favorable reception among many Americans. It was the most rational plan which they knew (before The World Calendar Association launched The World Calendar Plan at the close of 1930) and thus was endorsed by quite a number of prominent business men, statisticians and accountants. The 13-month calendar was endorsed because of its seeming simplicity and the much-desired stability. The public, however, did not take kindly to it because the changes were too drastic. A few of the changes follow:

The 13-month calendar was not easily divisible. The first quarter-year would always end with April 7 and the second quarter would begin with April 8. The half-year would begin with the 15th of the new month, Sol, and the last quarter would begin on September 22. This arrangement gave to each quarter three months and one week, or three and one-quarter months, causing fractional months. This fact alone would cause inconvenience to all activities and businesses based on quarter-years.

Another feature, looked upon with disfavor in the United States, was the change of familiar dates such as the Fourth of July, which became Sol 17. Then, too, the complete upheaval that would result from the adoption of this calendar was overwhelming in its effect. For instance, only the first 28 days of January would remain and thus be comparable with the present calendar. . . . The League of Nations eliminated [the 13-month calendar] when in 1937 the Council submitted only The World Calendar to the various nations for their opinion.

After having fought vainly for many years for the adoption of the 13-month calendar, under the able leadership of George Eastman in the United States and Moses B. Cotsworth in England, the International Fixed Calendar League, with offices in London, England, and in Rochester, New York, quietly closed its doors about 1937, and activities ceased.

The Moon Landings Were Faked It's now been nearly four decades since Neil Armstrong took his "giant leap for mankind" — if, that is, he ever set foot off this planet. Doubters say the U.S. government, desperate to beat the Russians in the space race, faked the lunar landings, with Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin acting out their mission on a secret film set, located (depending on the theory) either high in the Hollywood Hills or deep within Area 51. With the photos and videos of the Apollo missions only available through NASA, there's no independent verification that the lunar landings were anything but a hoax.

The smoking gun? Film of Aldrin planting a waving American flag on the moon, which critics say proves that he was not in space. The flag's movement, they say, clearly shows the presence of wind, which is impossible in a vacuum. NASA says Aldrin was twisting the flagpole to get the moon soil, which caused the flag to move. (And never mind that astronauts have brought back hundreds of independently verified moon rocks.) Theorists have even suggested that filmmaker Stanley Kubrick may have helped NASA fake the first lunar landing, given that his 1968 film 2001: A Space Odessey proves that the technology existed back then to artificially create a spacelike set. And as for Virgil I. Grissom, Edward H. White and Roger B. Chaffee — three astronauts who died in a fire while testing equipment for the first moon mission? Far-fetched as the hoax theory may seem, a 1999 Gallup poll showed that it's comparatively durable: 6% of Americans said they thought the lunar landings were fake, and 5% said they were undecided.

According to Mr Weidner, clues about the “controversial” version of events are peppered throughout Mr Kubrick’s films.

He said the Hollywood legend hid “secrets” in his movies, which Mr Kubrick then expected people to pick up on over the next 50 years or so. The conspiracy theorist argued there is no concrete proof astronauts ever went to the Moon.

Instead, he argued Mr Kubrick employed a technique known as front screen projection to shoot the Apollo 11 landing in a Hollywood studio.

Front screen projecting involves creating a detailed backdrop for a filmed scene by projecting an image onto a two-way mirror, which then reflects it onto a highly reflective surface. The technique was pioneered by the cinematographer in his 1966 masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Mr Weidner said: “Everybody thinks we went to the Moon, and I think we went to the Moon too, but I don’t think we went the way that they showed us.

When is NASA going back to the Moon?
NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine has vowed to return to the Moon “as soon as possible” as NASA sets its sights on the lunar orb and Mars.

In February, the NASA chief announced the US space agency’s renewed drive to reinvigorate NASA’s commitment towards lunar exploration.

As part of this renewed interest in the Moon, NASA aims to send robotic landers by the year 2024, followed by human crews no later than 2028.

He said: “It’s important that we get back to the Moon as soon as possible.

“This time when we go to the Moon, we’re actually going to stay. “We’re not going to leave flags and footprints and then come home and not go back for another 50 years.”

How Stanley Kubrick Staged the Moon Landing Have you ever met a person who’s been on the moon? There are only four of them left. Within a decade or so, the last will be dead and that astonishing feat will pass from living memory into history, which, sooner or later, is always questioned and turned into fable. It will not be exactly like the moment the last conquistador died, but will lean in that direction. The story of the moon landing will become a little harder to believe.

I’ve met three of the twelve men who walked on the moon. They had one important thing in common when I looked into their eyes: they were all bonkers. Buzz Aldrin, who was the second off the ladder during the first landing on July 20, 1969, almost exactly fifty years ago—he must have stared with envy at Neil Armstrong’s crinkly space-suit ass all the way down—has run hot from the moment he returned to earth. When questioned about the reality of the landing—he was asked to swear to it on a Bible—he slugged the questioner. When I sat down with Edgar Mitchell, who made his landing in the winter of 1971, he had that same look in his eyes. I asked about the space program, but he talked only about UFOs. He said he’d been wrapped in a warm consciousness his entire time in space. Many astronauts came back with a belief in alien life.

Maybe it was simply the truth: maybe they had been touched by something. Or maybe the experience of going to the moon—standing and walking and driving that buggy and hitting that weightless golf ball—would make anyone crazy. It’s a radical shift in perspective, to see the earth from the outside, fragile and small, a rock in a sea of nothing. It wasn’t just the astronauts: everyone who saw the images and watched the broadcast got a little dizzy.

July 20 1969, 3:17 P.M. E.S.T. The moment is an unacknowledged hinge in human history, unacknowledged because it seemed to lead nowhere. Where are the moon hotels and moon amusement parks and moon shuttles we grew up expecting? But it did lead to something: a new kind of mind. It’s not the birth of the space age we should be acknowledging on this fiftieth anniversary, but the birth of the paranoia that defines us. Because a man on the moon was too fantastic to accept, some people just didn’t accept it, or deal with its implications—that sea of darkness. Instead, they tried to prove it never happened, convince themselves it had all been faked. Having learned the habit of conspiracy spotting, these same people came to question everything else, too. History itself began to read like a fraud, a book filled with lies. To understand America, you can start with Apollo 11 and all that is counterfactual that’s grown around it; that’s when the culture of conspiracy, which is the culture of Donald Trump and fake news, was born.

The stories of a hoax predate the landing itself. As soon as the first capsules were in orbit, some began to dismiss the images as phony and the testimony of the astronauts as bullshit. The motivation seemed obvious: John F. Kennedy had promised to send a man to the moon within the decade. And, though we might be years behind the Soviets in rocketry, we were years ahead in filmmaking. If we couldn’t beat them to moon, we could at least make it look like we had.

Most of the theories originated in the cortex of a single man: William Kaysing, who’d worked as a technical writer for Rocketdyne, a company that made engines. Kaysing left Rocketdyne in 1963, but remained fixated on the space program and its goal, which was often expressed as an item on a Cold War to-do list—go to the moon: check—but was in fact profound, powerful, surreal. A man on the moon would mean the dawn of a new era. Kaysing believed it unattainable, beyond the reach of existing technology. He cited his experience at Rocketdyne, but, one could say he did not believe it simply because it was not believable. That’s the lens he brought to every NASA update. He was not watching for what had happened, but trying to figure out how it had been staged.

There were six successful manned missions to the moon, all part of Apollo. A dozen men walked the lunar surface between 1969 and 1972, when Harrison H. Schmitt—he later served as a Republican U.S. Senator from New Mexico—piloted the last lander off the surface. When people dismiss the project as a failure—we never went back because there is nothing for us there—others point out the fact that twenty-seven years passed between Columbus’s first Atlantic crossing and Cortez’s conquest of Mexico, or that 127 years passed between the first European visit to the Mississippi River and the second—it’d been “discovered,” “forgotten,” and “discovered” again. From some point in the future, our time, with its celebrities, politicians, its happiness and pain, might look like little more than an interregnum, the moment between the first landing and the colonization of space.

Kaysing put his theories in a book, self-published in 1976. His title is also his conclusion: We Never Went to the Moon: America’s Thirty Billion Dollar Swindle. He believed he was playing whistle-blower, calling attention to a cover-up. The human mind has evolved to see patterns. You see a face in the clouds, hear God in the wind. Some people spot a cabal where others see nothing but bureaucrats. It’s not because they are stupid; it’s because they are smart. The same skill that would have made them a success in one age makes them a kook in another.

Kaysing catalogued inconsistencies that “proved” the landing had been faked. There have been hundreds of movies, books, and articles that question the Apollo missions; almost all of them have relied on Kaysing’s “discoveries.”

Old Glory: The American flag the astronauts planted on the moon, which should have been flaccid, the moon existing in a vacuum, is taut in photos, even waving, reveling more than NASA intended. (Knowing the flag would be flaccid, and believing a flaccid flag was no way to declare victory, engineers fitted the pole with a cross beam on which to hang the flag; if it looks like its waving, that’s because Buzz Aldrin was twisting the pole, screwing it into the lunar soil).
There’s only one source of light on the moon—the sun—yet the shadows of the astronauts fall every which way, suggesting multiple light sources, just the sort you might find in a movie studio. (There were indeed multiple sources of light during the landings—it came from the sun, it came from the earth, it came from the lander, and it came from the astronauts’ space suits.)
Blast Circle: If NASA had actually landed a craft on the moon, it would have left an impression and markings where the jets fired during takeoff. Yet, as can be seen in NASA’s own photos, there are none. You know what would’ve left no impression? A movie prop. Conspiracy theorists point out what looks like a C written on one of the moon rocks, as if it came straight from the special effects department. (The moon has about one-fifth the gravity of earth; the landing was therefore soft; the lander drifted down like a leaf. Nor was much propulsion needed to send the lander back into orbit. It left no impression just as you leave no impression when you touch the bottom of a pool; what looks like a C is probably a shadow.)
Here you are, supposedly in outer space, yet we see no stars in the pictures. You know where else you wouldn’t see stars? A movie set. (The moon walks were made during the lunar morning—Columbus went ashore in daylight, too. You don’t see stars when the sun is out, nor at night in a light-filled place, like a stadium or a landing zone).
Giant Leap for Mankind: If Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon, then who was filming him go down the ladder? (A camera had been mounted to the side of the lunar module).
Kaysing’s alternate theory was elaborate. He believed the astronauts had been removed from the ship moments before takeoff, flown to Nevada, where, a few days later, they broadcast the moon walk from the desert. People claimed to have seen Armstrong walking through a hotel lobby, a show girl on each arm. Aldrin was playing the slots. They were then flown to Hawaii and put back inside the capsule after the splash down but before the cameras arrived. This scenario was turned into Capricorn One, probably the best acting work of O.J. Simpson’s career. In that movie, which did as much as Kaysing to spread doubt, the capsule burns up on reentry, leaving NASA with no choice: they must kill the astronauts. O.J. escapes, runs across the desert, and shows up at his own funeral. This twist was said to echo another aspect of the conspiracy, the most chilling. Some attributed the fire that tore through the rehearsal capsule during preparations for Apollo 1, killing three astronauts—Gus Grissom, Edward White II, Roger Chaffee—was really part of a cover-up, a way to silence men who were about to go public.

At any other time, such theories would have been dismissed as a madman’s raving, but America was willing to doubt in the seventies. That’s when the dream faded, when everything we’d been told began to sound like a fairy tale. American history itself was questioned, rewritten. Were we in fact the good guys at Plymouth Rock? How was the West really won? It was all recast in the afterglow of the Vietnam War, which was escalated with lies, and Watergate, when the president operated in the way of Don Vito Corleone. In other words, the space program, which began in one era, the buzz-cut age of American exceptionalism, culminated in another. There was a new sensibility. We were all becoming conspiracy theorists, trained to see behind the screen, spot the hoax, suspect everything. That cynicism is the only thing many Americans still have in common. It used to be baseball; now it’s the certainty that we’re being tricked.

Of all the fables that have grown up around the moon landing, my favorite is the one about Stanley Kubrick, because it demonstrates the use of a good counternarrative. It seemingly came from nowhere, or gave birth to itself simply because it made sense. (Finding the source of such a story is like finding the source of a joke you’ve been hearing your entire life.) It started with a simple question: Who, in 1969, would have been capable of staging a believable moon landing?

Kubrick’s masterpiece, 2001: A Space Odyssey, had been released the year before. He’d plotted it with the science fiction master Arthur C. Clarke, who is probably more responsible for the look of our world, smooth as a screen, than any scientist. The manmade satellite, GPS, the smart phone, the space station: he predicted, they built. 2001 picked up an idea Clarke had explored in his earlier work, particularly his novel Childhood’s End—the fading of the human race, its transition from the swamp planet to the star-spangled depths of deep space. In 2001, change comes in the form of a monolith, a featureless black shard that an alien intelligence—you can call it God—parked on an antediluvian plain. Its presence remakes a tribe of apes, turning them into world-exploring, tool-building killers who will not stop until they find their creator, the monolith, buried on the dark side of the moon. But the plot is not what viewers, many of them stoned, took from 2001. It was the special effects that lingered, all that technology, which was no less than a vision, Ezekiel-like in its clarity, of the future. Orwell had seen the future as bleak and authoritarian; Huxley had seen it as a drug-induced dystopia. In the minds Kubrick and Clarke, it shimmered, luminous, mechanical, and cold.

Most striking was the scene set on the moon, in which a group of astronauts, posthuman in their suits, descend into an excavation where, once again, the human race comes into contact with the monolith. Though shot in a studio, it looks more real than the actual landings. It’s the shadow and light, the space and enclosure, the way people move. Also: No CGI, no computer-created effects. Everything is actual—models maybe, but actual physical objects. There really was a space station and it really did turn; there really was a “lunar” surface, covered with rocks. It gave everything a weight you don’t feel in newer movies. To conspiracy theorists, it made perfect sense that NASA, realizing it could not actually land a man on the moon, turned to Kubrick.

But why would he do it?

It could have been an act of patriotism, a citizen heeding the call of a nation in need. It could have been for money, enough to cover every production from here to Eyes Wide Shut. Or maybe they had something on him. We all know about Hoover and the FBI. It would have been an easy gig in any case, cheaper and quicker than making 2001 itself.

So, I ask: Where did Stanley Kubrick watch the moon landing? Was he in front of his TV at home, a viewer like everyone else? Or was he off camera but on set, five feet from Armstrong, imploring the astronaut, “Remember, you are not in a studio … you are on the ladder of a space ship, about to become the first man to ever step foot on another planet. You’re terrified but also awed … ACTION!”

As the years went by (I’m going with the premise here) Kubrick’s pride in his accomplishment (the bastards bought it) turned into second thoughts, then guilt, then shame. My God, what have I done? He felt the need to confess. But who could he tell? If he went public, he’d vanish as surely as had the numerous people who knew the truth about the Kennedy assassination. He would instead confess with the only medium he really understood: film. It would be a coded confession, hidden but there for those with the right kind of eyes. It would bookmark the work he had done on the Apollo landing. That was fiction disguised as history. This would be history disguised as fiction. What genre would he work in? He’d already made a war movie (Paths of Glory), a comedy (Lolita), a sun-and-sandals epic (Spartacus), and a political thriller (Dr. Strangelove). That left horror, which was perfect for the story he had to tell, the story beneath the story, which was a kind of nightmare. Theorists note the ways in which Kubrick changed his source material, Steven King’s novel The Shining, the story of a haunted hotel and its winter caretaker and his family. One example: In the novel, the room to be avoided, the epicenter of bad mojo, is Room 217. Kubrick changed it to Room 237. Why would you make a change like that? Maybe because the moon, on average, is 237,000 miles from the earth.

Most of the work that ties Kubrick and The Shining to the moon landing can be found on the internet, a prime example being the page on author and filmmaker Jay Weidner’s website called “Secrets of the Shining, Or How Faking the Moon Landing Nearly Cost Stanley Kubrick his Marriage and His Life.” To my mind, this is a work of literature and, as such, demonstrates the best thing about the conspiracy theories. It lets you experience The Shining, which was released in 1980, with a renewed sense of discovery—that is, all over again.

It starts with the Overlook Hotel. We are told the hotel stands for America. It was once grand, but has been allowed to dilapidate. The role of the caretaker, a novelist named Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson)—an artist like Kubrick—is to maintain the fiction (we landed on the moon) while the foundation crumbles. The man who hires the caretaker sits behind a big desk with an American flag at his side and an American eagle behind him. He is the Establishment, and tells the caretaker an ugly truth: “The site is supposed to be located on an Indian burial ground, and I believe they actually had to repel a few Indian attacks as they were building it.” In other words, the hotel, like America, stands on the bones of its rightful owners. Later, the hotel is engulfed in a winter storm—that’s the Cold War which drove JFK to make that silly promise about putting a man on the moon. Meanwhile, Jack Torrance is writing, compiling a manuscript that turns out to be evidence of a collapsing mind. That’s what taking part in a lie does to the artist, and why he must confess.

Jack’s pages (it’s a terrifying discovery in the movie) consist of nothing but a single sentence written again and again: “All work and no play make Jack a dull boy.” To the ordinary viewer, it’s evidence of madness. To a conspiracy theorist, it’s a message. “All Work …,” “A L L” or A 1 1, as in Apollo 11? At one point, the caretaker’s son, Danny, racing his Big Wheel though the enormous maze of halls, a maze duplicated by the hedge maze outside the hotel, a maze in which the family is lost, in the way the nation is lost in a wilderness of mirrors, comes upon two twin girls (not in the book!), creepy specters, the ghosts of children killed by a previous caretaker. Why twins? Because Apollo 11 came after another fake, the Gemini mission. On the Zodiac chart, the symbol for Gemini is a pair of twins. The clincher comes when the Danny gets up from his tricycle and walks down the corridor, following a mysterious call, the sort that a government might make to a filmmaker in a time of crisis. The caretaker’s son is wearing an Apollo 11 sweater—weird, huh? It shows a rocket over the words Apollo 11. When he stands, it seems as if the rocket is blasting off, whereas of course it isn’t because it isn’t real. Danny walks, thus the rocket flies, until he finds himself outside Room 237. Danny, who stands for the child in Kubrick, the artist, has traveled to 237, that is, all the way to the moon. Only he hasn’t.

Is any of this real?

Of course not. It’s a face in the clouds. But it can feel more real than reality, as if you are finally seeing what’s always been hidden. That’s the thrill of conspiracy theory, why it can become an obsession, a way of being. It gives you a more interesting way to consume reality. It is literary criticism directed not at a text but at the world, which is a kind of text. It lets the reader understand that world in a new way. You feel the thrill you felt when you stumbled across the teachers’ edition in fifth grade. So here are the answers, all of the answers. You can finally see the truth behind the façade.

How Moon Landing Conspiracy Theories Spread Before the Internet Conspiracy theories about the Moon landing have been around for years. Decades, in fact. And while it’s easier than ever to spread false stories thanks to the internet, the belief that humans never landed on the Moon is way older than the web.

How did people learn about Moon landing conspiracy theories before the internet? People of the 20th century had a strange and primitive technology known as books.

The 1974 self-published book We Never Went to the Moon by Bill Kaysing was the first lengthy discussion on the topic committed to paper. Kaysing, who died in 2005, was a technical writer at space contractor Rocketdyne in the 1950s, which led some people to think that Kaysing knew what he was talking about when he insisted that the Moon landings were actually filmed at a production studio in Area 51. People believed Kaysing despite the fact that he would sometimes admit he knew “zero” about rockets.

Kaysing didn’t have to work too hard to convince an already skeptical public that the Apollo space program and the first Moon landing on July 20, 1969 was a sham. Americans of the late 1960s and early 1970s were already living through one of the most disheartening eras of the 20th century, with everything from the Vietnam War to the corruption of Watergate leading the average person to distrust anything their government might be telling them.

The Knight newspaper company in July 1970 found that a whopping 30 percent of Americans believed the Moon landing had been faked. And a Gallup poll in 1976 found that 28 percent of Americans believed that the Moon landing had been staged by the U.S. government—pretty consistent findings throughout the 1970s.

Kaysing thought he had a lot of reasons to believe the U.S. government needed to fake the Moon landing. First, he insisted that it simply wasn’t possible given the technology of the day. This argument was made through a lot of hand-waving and by suggesting that his firsthand knowledge from Rocketdyne gave him some special insight.

“As a witness to many rocket engine tests at the Santa Susana lab, I saw many failures, blowups and premature engine cutoffs due to incipient disaster,” Kaysing wrote in his book. “Even after the relatively modest Atlas engine cluster was accepted by the Air Force for use in the Atlas ICBM, failures occurred with repeated regularity.”

But his most damning evidence that the Moon landing was a hoax was perhaps the most easy to discredit. Specifically, Kaysing wrote, repeatedly, that the absence of stars in the photos taken on the Moon proved humans never went there.

“There are no stars in any of their pictures,” Kaysing told a New Jersey newspaper in 1977. “If they were taken on the moon there would have been some stars in evidence.” The suggestion was that this was some kind of oversight on the part of NASA and proved that it was all fake.

The reality? There are a lot of good reasons that you don’t see stars in the photos from the Moon. But people here in the 21st century probably understand that today better than they could in the 1970s. Anyone who’s used a smartphone to take pictures when there’s a single annoying light source can get easily frustrated. Astronauts are exposed to a lot more direct sunlight in space, so if you expose the photo using an appropriate aperture for the surface of the Moon, you’re not going to capture the relatively little light from stars.

Another one of Kaysing’s claims was that acclaimed director Stanley Kubrick was probably involved in faking the Moon landings. Kubrick’s 1968 movie 2001: A Space Odyssey included some of the most impressive special effects work that had been done to date and it helped create the theory that Kubrick had actually directed the footage we know today as the Apollo landings.

“While ‘2001’ was being filmed, Kubrick and his crew consulted with nearly 70 industrial and aerospace corporations, universities, observatories, weather bureaus, laboratories and other institutions to ensure that the film would be technically accurate,” Kaysing wrote. “Had this been done for ASP without the cover of ‘2001’, much suspicion would have been directed towards those making the inquires.”

What’s ASP? According to Kaysing, that stands for the “Apollo Simulation Project.” In fact, Kaysing even points to the ballooning budget of the film as more evidence that Kubrick was in on the moon hoax, insinuating that the director was paid by NASA to stage a cover-up.

Kaysing’s book also included photos of hotels in Las Vegas—the place where Kaysing said the astronauts lived while they were supposed to be on the Moon. In fact, Kaysing suggests that the astronauts insisted on Vegas because guys like Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and their publicity “managers” wanted to live it up in style.

Hard to argue with that, right?

Another piece of “evidence” that Kaysing spends considerable time on throughout the book is the fact that the practice sessions that astronauts conducted look like a fake Moon landing. Admittedly, I made the same joke back in 2014 before I had even heard of Kaysing’s book.

And the photos really do look like prep for a fake landing. But they’re not. They’re just training. Obviously these photos have stuck around and are used on the internet as “evidence” even today. Ralph Rene is another Moon hoaxer who gained prominence before most American were online, having published a book called MENSA Lectures, retitled The Last Skeptic Of Science after Mensa reportedly sued for using the name without permission. But it was Rene’s second book, published in 1994, that made him a folk hero of the Moon hoax community. Called NASA Mooned America!, the book, which is still available on Amazon, has many similarities to Kaysing’s work in the 1970s, but includes some even more outlandish claims.

One of the most damning pieces of evidence that Rene has? The astronauts don’t look sufficiently excited upon their return. Rene published this photo to show that the astronauts were actually embarrassed that they’d just lied to the American public: Rene explained:

Is this the look of three men who had just returned from being the first men to walk on the Moon? The Apollo 11 crew have just returned to Earth and are talking to President Nixon from quarantine. This group is definitely not a bunch of happy campers. Could they feel ashamed about something they didn’t do?

I mean, what more evidence do you need?

As the decades went on, a larger percentage of Americans came to accept that we probably landed on the Moon. By 1999, just six percent of us thought that the entire thing was a hoax. Perhaps because as technology advances, things like that seem less wild. But the conspiracy theorists are still out there, obviously. And they’ve got a louder voice than ever, even if their numbers have dwindled.

Kaysing and Rene are no longer around, but they both live on through the waking nightmare that is our internet. Both appear in some of the most popular Moon hoax videos currently online, including one video, “The Truth Behind the Moon Landings,” that has almost a million views on YouTube as of this writing.

You clearly don’t need the internet for a conspiracy theory to spread. And in an age of actual conspiracies perpetrated by powerful people, it’s easy to see the appeal of conspiracy theories like the Moon hoax.

But, like it or not, we probably landed on the Moon. Why? The best evidence, aside from all the movie footage, photos, and Moon rocks, might be a simple argument. Given the camera technology of the 1960s, it would’ve been harder to fake the Moon landing that it would’ve been to just go there. Seriously.

The 48th anniversary of Neil Armstrong's first steps on the lunar surface took place in July, but many conspiracy theorists across the globe remain convinced it was the biggest cover up of all time.

Moon hoax conspiracy theorists say a desperate President John F Kennedy, who wanted to beat the Russians in the space race to the moon, ordered the production of a series of films in top-secret studios to make it look like NASA astronauts made it to the lunar surface.

At the heart of the theory are claims that the radioactive Van Allen belt around Earth would have been lethal to fly through.

The video narrator said: "I came across this. I have no idea if it's been discovered before or uploaded before.

"It is from a Moon photograph. It is a reflection from one of the astronaut's face visor, so I thought it looked a bit strange.

"I took a picture of it using my software. What we appear to have here is a figure of a human not wearing a space suit, circa early 70s, it is an Apollo 17 photograph." He said he had learned there had been some dispute about the authenticity of the pictures in 2009, but that he had not found the particular picture discussed before or through Google.

He added: "You can see some sort of… it looks like a man back in the early 1970s, long hair, you know.

"He is wearing some sort of, I don't know, waistcoat type thing… one leg there, with one shoe, another leg and a shadow of that figure presumably.

"I am going to keep looking through the photographs to see if I can find any other examples.

"There has ben a lot of debate about whether these photos were faked."

He said that until seeing the picture he had believed that NASA did make it to the Moon. He added: "I sort of think we did make it to the Moon, but this is starting to make me think if we did because where is this guy's space suit?" Nasa does not comment on specific moon hoax claims, but has previously vehemently denied any of the Apollo missions were faked, and insists it has made it to the moon.

Several conspiracy theory sceptics have debunked previous pictures put forward as proof the lunar landings were faked.

Some people who viewed the video were convinced it was proof of a lunar hoax.

Kati O'Brien posted on YouTube: "Pretty earth-shaking for a believer in the landing." However, many people del the figure in the reflection looked like it was wearing a space suit, and was, therefore, just another astronaut.

It’s a bold claim but filmmaker and author Jay Weidner is adamant that NASA forged the famous footage, and Kubrick was their go-to technical genius who made it look like the real deal to a watching world.

July 20, 2019, will mark the 50th anniversary of the 1969 moon landing when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin touched down on the lunar lump of rock. Between then and now, conspiracy theories have run rampant that not everything was as it appeared. Cynics have even suggested that “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” was apparently nothing more than film studio trickery.

The Express reports that Jay Weidner endorses this school of thought and during a public appearance on Coast to Coast AM radio, he laid out in no uncertain terms exactly why.

The conspiracy theorist explained, “I think they just decided for publicity reasons that it was probably better to have somebody do it here on Earth. Then they could go about their business and not reveal their secret equipment to the Soviet Union during the middle of the Cold War.”

“So it isn’t really all that big of a leap to say that they might have shown us something that wasn’t quite real, to protect national security.”

Weidner alleges the moon landing footage was used via an in-camera visual technique Kubrick pioneered in his movie 2001: A Space Odyssey called “Front Screen Projection.”

Weidner believes Kubrick was perfect for NASA’s need to fake the landing because “he was a photographer, he understood lighting, he understood emulsion, he understood all the techniques of a photographer. That’s how he got started.”

“He came into filmmaking as a technician first and an actor’s director second, and that suited NASA perfectly because that’s what they needed. They needed someone who could solve problems, someone who could come in and technically solve the problems.The acting wasn’t as important to them as the technical problems and so Stanley began to solve the technical problems.”

Weidner has analyzed the Apollo 11 photographs and believes he has found evidence of “strategically placed horizon lines” behind the “Apollo 11 set.”

Here’s where things get even murkier. Weidner doesn’t doubt that Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon, he just believes the footage which was broadcast around the world was fake.

You might ask yourself why? Well according to Weidner, tensions at the time between the U.S. and the Soviet Union forced NASA’s hand. Not only would fake footage keep a number of secret technologies out of Russian hands, but there was also the question of what would happen if something went wrong during the landing. For example, if the Apollo lunar module failed to descend properly, the American public would have had to endure watching Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin die live on television.

Of course, there is also the theory that when the astronauts actually landed on the moon, they encountered extraterrestrial life. Something which the U.S. government quickly hushed up because they felt it was too much for the world to handle.

Mr. Weidner said, “I’m not saying we did not go to the moon. I believe we did go to the moon.”

“I believe there are reflectors on the moon, they put seismograph machines on the moon, but I don’t believe that what we saw was real.”

NASA is not keen to comment on any allegations about hoax moon landings but in the past, they have said, “to some extent debating this subject is an insult to the thousands who worked for years to accomplish the most amazing feats of exploration in history.” “And it certainly is an insult to the memory of those who have given their lives for the exploration of space.”

There's has long been speculation over whether the U.S. actually landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. Plenty of failed attempts had preceded the successful launching of three astronauts - Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins - into orbit, making them the first three American men embarking on a cosmic journey no American had been on before. The pressure to stay in the space race was high before the successful Apollo 11 launch. There was a deep-seated need at NASA and within the U.S. government to outdo the USSR, who were also cultivating a space program at the time. This has led to numerous conspiracy theories developing in the years since as to whether the moon landing was real, and if it wasn't real, how it was faked. The general feeling behind the Kubrick theory is this: Why not pull in a Hollywood heavy like the director of Dr. Strangelove and Spartacus to direct fake footage of a moon landing and pretend NASA had not only gone to space but had also touched down on the astronomical body?

Of course, Kubrick did in fact fake - we repeat: did fake the 1969 moon landing. Even though it's unclear exactly who put this conspiracy theory into circulation, there's a lot to unpack within it about how some have come to believe Kubrick helped NASA pull off what sounds like a very risky stunt. Let's break it down.

There was a bit of interesting timing happening in regards to where Kubrick was in his career and when the Apollo 11 launch would take place. In 1968, Kubrick was working on 2001: A Space Odyssey. At this same time, NASA was in the final stages of preparation for the Apollo 11 launch. Recent years of exploded capsules, technical failures, and technological setbacks would have supported the idea NASA was trying to find another way to pull off this launch without having to lose any more lives. So, the decision was made to pretend as if the Apollo 11 spaceflight and subsequent moon landing had happened. The theory goes that Kubrick was considered a person of interest to help NASA out because it looked like, according to the theory, the Apollo 11 launch wouldn't happen.

The theory then claims that Kubrick was approached by NASA in secret while he was in post-production on 2001: A Space Odyssey. NASA wanted Kubrick's assistance because he had just shot this epic film on space. In NASA's mind, Kubrick would be an asset in creating this faked moon landing footage because he'd spent so much time re-creating the environment of outer space - and he was a great director, full stop. The plan, according to this conspiracy theory, was that the Apollo 11 ship would really launch and the capsule of the ship would splash down into the ocean, but all footage shot while Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins were allegedly in space would be footage shot by Kubrick and woven into a cohesive live broadcast.

Yes, there was a Kubrick-NASA connection back in the late '60s but it was not as secretive or sinister as this conspiracy theory alleges. In reality, Kubrick had approached two aerospace contractors, as well as NASA employees, Frederick Ordway and Harry Lange, to consult on 2001: A Space Odyssey. The men were called in for their expertise to help make the scenes depicting humans landing on the moon in the film look real.

There's also the fact that 2001: A Space Odyssey was released before the Apollo 11 spaceflight. This matters because the footage Kubrick shot for 2001: A Space Odyssey differs greatly from the footage of Armstrong and Aldrin walking on the moon's surface. The footage from each respective event varies significantly. It all boils down to this: If Kubrick did shoot the moon landing footage, why wouldn't he have replicated what he shot in 2001? In 2001, when the astronauts touch down for the first time, dust flies up and reacts to the movement. This didn't happen in the moon landing footage because the Moon is in the vacuum of space and nothing would move. Additionally, the movements of the characters in 2001 differ greatly from the movements of Armstrong and Aldrin. The 2001 characters move a little easier and quicker, unlike the astronauts during the actual moon landing, who are moving slower since the Moon has 1/6 the gravity Earth has.

The devil has always been in the details with Kubrick's 1980 film The Shining. Some believe there are details within The Shining, placed there specifically by Kubrick, to tease his involvement in helping to fake the moon landing. To be clear, Kubrick has never explained the reasons behind the following Apollo 11-specific choices he made for set design, costume design, or storytelling. These are simply connections made by the average moviegoer which have attached themselves to the conspiracy theory over the years and helped it grow in its infamy.

Among the details picked out by viewers over time they believe connect Kubrick to the moon landing are: Danny's Apollo 11 sweater is believed to be Kubrick directly linking himself to the actual event; the room number was allegedly changed from "217" to "237" to reference the Moon being 237,000 miles away from Earth (it's actually 238,900 miles); the powdered drink Tang, which happens to be the astronaut's drink of choice, is displayed prominently in the Overlook Hotel's pantry; and finally, the word "All" in Jack's typed out "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" allegedly resembles "A11" or, "Apollo 11." Some of these details are apocryphal and some are based on speculation; none prove Kubrick was ever involved in the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Since then, the World Bank has predicted a global recession for 2023, anticipating GDP growth of 1.7%, the slowest pace outside the 2009 and 2020 recessions since 1993. The global economy could face a recession and one of the weakest paces of growth on record in 2023, according to annual projections released Tuesday by the World Bank Group, following a year of accelerated inflation, worsening financial conditions and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Forecasts for global growth in 2023 were cut nearly in half, dropping from 3% to 1.7%—the third-weakest pace of growth ever projected by the organization, behind paces recorded during the 2009 and 2020 recessions.
The U.S. is projected to experience 0.5% growth in real GDP in 2023, compared to no growth for the European Union and 2.7% for emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs)—which includes countries like India (6.6%) and Russia (-3.3%)— excluding China (4.3%).

The organizations said growth projections were cut because inflation rates have “triggered unexpectedly rapid” policies, resulting in worsening financial conditions, while economic “shockwaves” and an energy crisis continue because of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, the organization said.

World Bank President David Malpass suggested investing in creating new jobs, improved cross-border trade and increased energy access could alleviate the issues facing the global economy, adding “there are significant reforms that could be undertaken now” to curve away from a recession.

Accelerated inflation rates in 2022 required banks around the world to reverse pandemic-era policy measures, resulting in an “incomplete recovery” by global economies, the World Bank said. The organization’s report is a full percentage point lower than projections released in October by the International Monetary Fund, which continued to downgrade its forecast for the global economy in the organization’s biannual report because of worsening inflation and disruptions spurred by the war in Ukraine. “The crisis facing development is intensifying,” Malpass said of the projections, adding “though the world is now in a very tight spot, there should be no room for defeatism.” Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and other reserve officials have noted the U.S. labor market, which posted stronger-than-expected numbers last month, is evidence the U.S. economy can continue to withstand additional rate hikes. Despite this, however, layoffs continue at several large U.S. companies, after nearly 125,000 were laid off in 2020.

China and Russia step up bid to challenge U.S. dollar’s dominance

Efforts by China and Russia to chip away at the U.S. dollar’s dominance in global payments have gained urgency with the Ukraine war and tensions over Taiwan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin in June touted plans to create a new international reserve currency based on a basket of currencies of BRICS members Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Creating an alternative to the dollar-based global payments system would allow Moscow and Beijing to evade economic sanctions — a financial weapon whose powers and limits have become clear in Western nations’ response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The proposal, which Putin said was “under review,” seems to envision a BRICS version of the International Monetary Fund’s special drawing rights — a reserve asset that IMF members can tap during a cash crunch.

The value of SDRs is pegged to a basket of five currencies: the U.S. dollar, the euro, the Chinese yuan, the British pound and the Japanese yen.

As a result of international sanctions following the attack on Ukraine, Russia has seen many of its banks excluded from the SWIFT global payments messaging system and lost access to its central bank’s assets parked overseas. For Russia, a BRICS-based reserve currency would provide a new tool for expanding transactions in currencies other than the U.S. dollar.

This initiative has no chance of posing a threat to the IMF-led currency establishment, said a Japanese official involved in currency policy.

“The BRICS currencies are weak in terms of stability, liquidity and the ability to retain value,” the official said. “Facebook’s cryptocurrency, libra, failed to take off because of those issues.”

Yet Russia and China have taken other steps to lay the foundation for an alternative payment system.

China in 2015 created the Cross-Border Interbank Payment System, or CIPS, in an attempt to offer an alternative to SWIFT. Participating banks totaled 1,341 as of June this year, including top Japanese banks as well as Deutsche Bank and JPMorgan Chase.

According to SWIFT, the Chinese yuan’s share in international settlements stood at 2.17% in June, up 0.4 point from two years earlier. The number is still far below the dollar’s 41.16%, and the euro’s 35.55%. But its share reached a record 3.2% in January, and at one point surpassed the yen to claim fourth place after the pound.

Overseas investors are increasing yuan-denominated bond holdings, and companies affiliated with Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom are switching from the dollar to the yuan for part of their payments, bolstering the currency’s standing.

“Sanctions against Russia have made China aware of the need to protect itself from possible financial sanctions in the future,” said Rie Nakada at the Daiwa Institute of Research. While she sees a sudden increase in yuan-based transactions as unlikely due to Beijing’s capital controls, Nakada said more institutions will consider taking part in nondollar settlement networks.

Attention is also on the fate of Russia’s SDRs, worth roughly $24 billion. The IMF distributed a record $650 billion worth of SDRs to members in response to the pandemic. Russia’s SDRs also increased as a result.

But in order for Moscow to exercise the SDRs, one of the five currencies’ central banks needs to agree. While that path is shut with the U.S., U.K., EU and Japan, China could agreed to exchange them with the yuan.

Analysts say China is unlikely to risk international backlash to come to the aid of Russia. But Robert Kahn of Eurasia Group says the world needs to pay attention to how financial relations between Russia and China are evolving.

Masaya Sakuragawa, a professor of economics at Japan’s Keio University, said, “Looking back at history, the currency order tends to change after a major war.”

The dollar established its global currency position when the U.S. provided assistance to war-ravaged Europe through the Marshall Plan after World War II. Similarly, China could boost the yuan’s standing by providing assistance to Russia after the war is over, Sakuragawa said.

Now we are one of the most hated.

The things that we have been doing to ourselves and to other countries are about to catch up with us in a major way. We thought that we were getting away with everything that we were doing, but that was never the case. When you do evil, there is always a price to pay.

Over the past few weeks, some very strange things have begun to happen. And in the months ahead, we are going to see some more unusual events. But to be honest, this is just the tip of the iceberg. For now, you are just going to have to trust me on this one.

If my tone sounds ominous, that is good, because that is precisely the mood that I am trying to convey. Right now, there are major things going on behind the scenes, and all of our comfortable little lives are about to get shaken up big time.

I have often written about the global elite and about how they like to go about doing things. Throughout history, they have always liked to create order out of chaos. Just recently, I wrote about how the average American spends more than 10 hours a day plugged in to some form of media. If we are not watching television, we are listening to the radio, going to movies, playing video games, messing with our smartphones or spending endless hours on the Internet. And more than 90 percent of the “programming” that we are fed through these devices is produced by just 6 absolutely gigantic media corporations.

And who controls those gigantic media corporations?

The elite do.

And have you noticed how “the mainstream media” loves to divide us?

Today, Americans are more divided than ever it seems. Our news broadcasts endlessly fixate on “black vs. white”, “male vs. female”, “liberal vs. conservative”, “rich vs. poor”, etc, etc.

Americans are extremely angry and frustrated at this point, but most of our anger and frustration is directed at one another.

How can we ever hope to come up with any solutions for our nation if we spend so much time hating our fellow citizens?

But this is just how the elite like it.

They love to play divide and conquer. If we were united, we would be far more difficult to manipulate.

And even if we did find a way to come together, what values and principles would we use to rebuild this nation?

The truth is that most Americans deeply reject the values and principles that the founders of this country once held so dear.

Personally, I am very optimistic about the future. My wife and I believe that the greatest chapters of our lives are still ahead of us.

But am I optimistic about the future of the United States?

No, I am not.

Perhaps you are reading this and you have come to the conclusion that I am being irrationally negative. If so, you are probably spending way too much time plugged in to the “propaganda matrix” that I described above. The establishment wants you to believe that everything is going to be just fine and that the best days for this world are ahead.

I have some bad news for those `optimists`! There will be no recovery. What is happening now is as David Icke has written at length, part of a grand strategy to create a New World Order, a `One World State` with a World Government, World Army, World Bank, World Currency, World Religion and a vastly reduced population of micro chipped slaves. Money as we know it will soon cease to exist. In it’s place will be `Electronic Money`, initially utilised via `Biometric ID Cards` being introduced at the moment in the UK and elsewhere, which in turn will be replaced by `Personal Microchips` replete with RFID technology. This `progress` will be sold to the public on the basis of being to everyone’s advantage. Never again will our children be vulnerable to `capture and abuse` for we will know where they are at all times (as will the State for the rest of their lives) and our `money` will be `un-stealable` (except by the State).

Of course, one must consider what happens if our `microchip` gets switched off? Perhaps because we are not complying fully with the plethora of ever more personally restrictive legislation certain to be introduced in order to dictate and micromanage our every action, and even our every thought. Simply put, unlike at the moment, when if our Credit Card fails to `perform` you can just use cash. When there is no cash, and your `chip` is `down. You steal or starve!

The above verse at the top of this page from the Book of Revelations is prophetic indeed, and we are moving ever closer to the time that without that `mark`, or in our case, chip, we will be unable to survive.

The economic aspect and goal of the Illuminati as stated in paragraph two is a world currency. In order to effect this, it has been necessary to degrade the independent national currencies. The introduction of the Euro was a stepping stone towards this, and the current economic woes being felt in the UK are undoubtedly intended to drag that once proud nation `kicking and screaming` into the `single currency`. But again, the Euro was never intended as and end in itself. Only an `increment` towards the final solution to the Luciferian Illuminati’s goal of world domination, and their world money system.

Within days, Speculators, Investors and the average `Joe’s and Joans` had `bid up` Gold prices to an astonishing $875 an ounce. The rumours that the once mighty dollar was earmarked for `extermination` was out, and the world was turning to the only commodity which had traditionally assured security; Gold.

The Illuminati schemers through US government debt and conspiratorial acts succeeded in diminishing the value of the Dollar significantly. The second blow came in August 1982, just as the IMF was about to begin it’s annual meeting in Toronto. That month, Mexico, Brazil and a host of other nations, deeply indebted to the US declared themselves unable to pay. Mexico alone owed $64 Billion. The total sum involved was close to $94 Billion.

It became apparent even then that the Dollar was living on `borrowed` time. There can’t be many today who take even a rudimentary interest in world affairs who do not realise that the US Dollar (along with all the other currencies) is nothing more than a worthless piece of paper. But be warned, the `new money` will be worth even less.

What has happened during the past twelve or so months should come as a shock to nobody. In his book `Delicate Balance`, John Zajac warned;

” The financial system of the free world is on the verge of a major catastrophe. In fact, it almost collapsed in the summer of 1983, and the US Government Printing Office was ready to print `new money` in case it did”.

In reality, the Dollar like the other major currencies is not held up by Gold or Silver, but by the blind faith of the people, which is all that causes it to be acceptable for trade and commerce. As Zajac writes,

“All it would take to collapse the world’s financial system is the realisation that paper money is only paper. After all, it has no intrinsic value, unlike something that can be used, manufactured or eaten”. Most wealth is not even in the form of money any more; it is represented by a piece of paper (deposit slip) that a bank gives you symbolising the wealth you gave to it. Since the bank lent your money to somebody else, it cannot return it to you any more. The person who borrowed your `money` from your bank bought something, and the person or company who sold it to him put the money in some other bank and received another paper slip for it. That bank immediately lent the money to someone else. Today, every paper dollar is claimed by at least six sources: the person who deposited it, the bank, the person who sold something to the borrower from the bank. This third person’s bank, the person who borrowed from the second bank, and the person who sold goods or services to the second banks’ borrower”.

The New Money.

This `conspiracy` to subvert America and create a One World Imperium has been in the works not for years, but Millennia. In order to achieve their evil goals, the Illuminati have spared neither `The Rod nor Money`. They have brought our planet to the brink twice already, in 1914 and 1939 and they are prepared if necessary to do it again. They are well versed in creating problems which demand solutions. Long ago, the Bible, prophesied uncannily our global situation today:

But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, self-assuming, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3 having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4 betrayers, headstrong, puffed up [with pride], lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godly devotion but proving false to its power; and from these turn away. 2 Timothy 3:1-5.

Using the Hegelian Dialectic, or what David Icke has termed `problem, reaction, solution`, the would be world masters have created the conditions for a total collapse of the planet’s financial infrastructure. When this happens, in the not at all distant future, the terrified masses will cry out for someone to `do something`. That something will be the `new money`.

Although in actuality dead, the illusion that the Dollar is still alive, if only in name alone gives some hope at least to all those American’s whose lives are invested in that small piece of paper. But the day approaches when the `truth` will come out and millions of lives will be destroyed, not only in America, but in Europe, Japan, and around the world. As those who survive scream out in pain for help, the `great rescue` will be announced; The New Money. Their One World Currency, which will be issued to all the people of the world, sharply controlled by the few `Superbanks` remaining, and issued `Electronically`, either in the form of an ID Card, or more likely as the personal micro chip.

He Who Controls The Money.

Mayer Amschel Rothschild, the founder of the Rothschild dynasty is quoted as having said,

” Give me control over a nations money and I care not who makes its laws”.

It goes without saying that whoever controls the money controls the country, or in this case, the World. Senator Ron Paul said, ” If you control the money, you actually control every transaction that exists in this country”.

If you have control over money, you can do just about what you like with people. Since the beginnings of civilisation, Kings, Emperors, Popes, Dictators and a selection of Illuminati `frontmen` have attempted to establish control over the lives of the people by controlling the money. But who are and what is the Illuminati? As David Livingstone, the Canadian Historian and Author writes in his book, `Terrorism and The Illuminati`,

“The Illuminati claim to be descended of Fallen Angels, who taught them the “Ancient Wisdom”, also known as the Kabbalah, which they have been preserving throughout the centuries. These Fallen Angels are referred to in the Bible, Book of Genesis, as the Nephilim, or “Sons of God”, and were said to have descended to earth and intermarried with human beings. Christian interpretations struggle with the passage, choosing to translate the term into “mighty men”. However, apocryphal Jewish texts explain that they were the devil and his legions, who were cast out of Heaven, and took wives from the female descendants of Cain. They produced a race known as the Anakim.. These Luciferians have been carefully intermarrying amongst each other, and have included among them many of the leading figures of history. They begin with a Persian Royal family, who intermarried with that of Alexander the Great. By combining with that of Herod the Great, these families were responsible for the creation and dissemination of the leading mystery school of the Roman Empire, the Mysteries of Mithras, which eventually succeeded in co-opting the emerging Christian movement, by producing Catholic Christianity”.

An in depth analysis of who and what the `Illuminati` is/are is beyond the scope of this essay, but for anyone wishing to acquire a comprehensive overview of them, their history, their plan and who they are, I highly recommend Mr Livingstone’s excellent work.

Suffice to say, there is a core of 13 families who trace their lineage back to the near east into Biblical times, and they include the Royal Heads of Europe, Presidents of the US (a huge number of whom are interrelated with the European Royal Houses), the leading Industrialists, Media Tycoons, Bankers and generally, the ruling global caste. They are worshippers of Lucifer, and operate through a vast array of secret societies and `front groups`.

Emmanuel Swedenbourg, a Swedish Mystic wrote in 1748;

“I spoke with mystics concerning the possession of money…Certain spirits are of such a character derived from the light of the body (when their spirits were in human flesh) that they wish to possess money for money’s sake, not for any other use, than to be delighted with money… They have said that they desired it on account of delight at the sight of money, silver and gold”

Many will dismiss this aspect of the Global takeover as the `stuff and nonsense` of conspiracy theories, but I would suggest that before jumping to any such conclusions, the reader take the time necessary to investigate the interconnecting bloodlines of the above intimated 13 families (See Credits) and realise that those involved are very serious indeed about their lineage and their believed right to rule, we the people.

A Global Financial Crisis : `Global Solutions` are needed.

As the current manipulated, orchestrated and designed global financial crisis worsens, people around the world will notice that their `money` will not cover even the barest necessities. This is part of the `softening up` process which will slowly prepare people for the `hammer blow` planned. This is the purpose of the much vaunted monetary crisis. As life becomes impossible and unbearable, people will be willing to accept the planned change just to get some financial relief. In fact they will demand it.

Our world is being driven into a global depression much worse than anything previously experienced. Facing financial disaster, the people around the world, and particularly in the `developed countries` will quite likely decide that the `new money` is better than none at all. This is exactly what the designers of the plan hope for. These manipulators of populations will not only be aided by the crisis and the ensuing panic, they will benefit financially as they buy up stocks and shares at rock bottom prices and then at the given time, when their ends have been fulfilled, they create an artificial `boom` which will raise the value of the above and when the dust settles, even more of the planet’s wealth will be in their hands.

They will further justify albeit highly erroneously, the move towards a universal electronic money system by fraudulently claiming that it will stop money laundering and other criminal activities. And that when the new money goes `online` and all other currency is declared worthless, then the relevant tax authorities will be able to scrutinise who has been hiding money and using it for criminal purposes. The criminals will be unmasked they will claim.

But as ever, the reality will be quite different. The international criminals, have most of their money deposited in the `Megabanks` owned by the Illuminati creators of the crisis in the first place. Only a tiny percentage of their ill gotten gain is held in Dollars or Euros and the like. As is invariably the case, the so called `Terrorists`, Mafioso and Drug Cartels will be able to retain the proceeds of their criminal activities because in the main, they are either working for, with or colluding with the bankers. Those fellow travellers in thrall to the Illuminati will of course receive advance warning of any crash and will be protected because of this privileged knowledge. As usual, it will be the honest hard working men and women who will suffer when the `robbery` takes place.

It’s All For The Best.

The great `money swap` will probably go something like this: The Governments of the various nations around the world will call in all money in current use. An announcement will be made that money previously in circulation is worthless. People will be required to hand in all of their paper money and Credit/Debit cards and will either be issued at their own cost (setting them from the beginning in debt) with either an Electronic `Smart Card` in the form of a Biometric ID. Or, a `Personal RFID Microchip`, on which will be stored every piece of personal information imaginable along with remote accessibility and who knows, controllability also.

With all paper money taken out of circulation, and eventually, once the `smart card ` initiative is shown to be unreliable, the foretold `mark of the beast` upon humanity, in the form of the RFID Microchip, the `Book Of Revelations` will be vindicated. Of course, it will all be sold as being for the good of all people, and again, the fact that an embedded chip is far more difficult to steal than cash will likely be one of the selling points. But how many ready to accept the new money will realise the contra indicators. William Raspberry, Former Editorialist for the Washington Post wrote this about the intent to introduce `E-Money`;

“The benefits of replacing cash will be incalculable. No cash to smuggle. The sale of illegal drugs would cease since no one would want a record of it’s transaction. The spread of AIDs would be curtailed as drug abuse ends. The cost of government would go down, as would the cost of private business. Tax evasion, payment in cash to avoid sales tax, or failure to report cash income would end. The national debt could be reduced: stolen items could not be sold without a trace. Personal Security would be assured. Little old ladies could walk in the park again”.

Raspberry also mentioned, more ominously when one understand the agenda, that every single transaction would create a record which could then be used for criminal investigations, as cheques, bank accounts and credit card records are used presently. Yes, and much much more. With a whole database backing up this new `E-money/personal identity system, life will be come increasingly like the words of the song by the Rock Group `The Police`…

“Every breath you take, every move you make, every claim you stake, I’ll be watching you”.

This `Control Zone Utopia` is what the power hungry self styled lords of money envision for mankind. As mentioned above, this development will give the `Hidden Masters` untold control over people’s lives, their very existence even, and the incentives to be a good `citizen` will be sharply increased. Nobody will want their ID card refused, or Chip switched off. And how many of those begging to be saved from their economic misery when accepting the `new money` will stop and realize that with it’s introduction, their new lords and masters will have gained complete and utter control over their lives, exactly as prophesied in the Bible during the `Last Days`.(source)

What Will Happen First, An Economic Collapse or Martial Law The Coming Food Crisis and Be Ready ? Global food security is stretched to the breaking point, and Russia’s fires and Pakistan’s floods are only making a bad situation worse.

According to the World Bank, 44 million people around the globe have been pushed into extreme poverty since last June because of rising food prices.
The world is losing topsoil at an astounding rate. In fact, according to Lester Brown, “one third of the world’s cropland is losing topsoil faster than new soil is forming through natural processes”.
Due to U.S. ethanol subsidies, almost a third of all corn grown in the United States is now used for fuel. This is putting a lot of stress on the price of corn.
Due to a lack of water, some countries in the Middle East find themselves forced to almost totally rely on other nations for basic food staples. For example, it is being projected that there will be no more wheat production in Saudi Arabia.
Water tables all over the globe are being depleted at an alarming rate due to “overpumping”. According to the World Bank, there are 130 million people in China and 175 million people in India that are being fed with grain with water that is being pumped out of aquifers faster than it can be replaced. So what happens once all of that water is gone?
In the United States, the systematic depletion of the Ogallala Aquifer could eventually turn “America’s Breadbasket” back into the “Dust Bowl”.
Diseases such as UG99 wheat rust are wiping out increasingly large segments of the world food supply.
The tsunami and subsequent nuclear crisis in Japan have rendered vast agricultural areas in that nation unusable. In fact, there are many that believe that eventually a significant portion of northern Japan will be considered to be uninhabitable. Not only that, many are now convinced that the Japanese economy, the third largest economy in the world, is likely to totally collapse as a result of all this.
The price of oil may be the biggest factor on this list. The way that we produce our food is very heavily dependent on oil. The way that we transport our food is very heavily dependent on oil. When you have skyrocketing oil prices, our entire food production system becomes much more expensive. If the price of oil continues to stay high, we are going to see much higher food prices and some forms of food production will no longer make economic sense at all.
At some point the world could experience a very serious fertilizer shortage. According to scientists with the Global Phosphorus Research Initiative, the world is not going to have enough phosphorous to meet agricultural demand in just 30 to 40 years.
Food inflation is already devastating many economies around the globe. For example, India is dealing with an annual food inflation rate of 18 percent.
According to the United Nations, the global price of food reached a new all-time high in February.
According to the World Bank, the global price of food has risen 36% over the past 12 months.
The commodity price of wheat has approximately doubled since last summer.
The commodity price of corn has also about doubled since last summer.
The commodity price of soybeans is up about 50% since last June.
The commodity price of orange juice has doubled since 2009.
There are about 3 billion people around the globe that live on the equivalent of 2 dollars a day or less and the world was already on the verge of economic disaster before this year even began.

The Group of Twenty leading developed and developing nations must uphold their pledges of $22 billion to enhance global food security by sending real money out the door. The multilateral Global Agriculture and Food Security Program, a new global partnership funded by commitments from the United States, Canada, South Korea, Spain, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is to be commended for issuing $224 million in initial grants to help increase food security and reduce poverty in five developing countries.

But lasting gains in agricultural productivity will require something more — action to confront climate change. Food shortages resulting from severe crop losses will occur more frequently and take longer to recover from as more people become vulnerable to extreme weather events like the droughts and flooding we see today in Russia and Pakistan. The World Bank predicts that developing countries will require $75 billion to $100 billion a year for the next 40 years to adapt to the effects of climate change on agricultural productivity, infrastructure, and disease.

This year, we may be able to limit the damage to a single supply shock in Russia and Eastern Europe. But even in the best of times, our global food system is stretched to the breaking point by the ever-present challenges of population growth, increased demand from changing diets, higher energy costs, and more extreme weather. Experts at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization estimate global agricultural productivity must double by 2050 to keep pace with increased demand. Unless we take immediate action, we are destined to race from food crisis to food crisis for generations to come, with grim consequences for the world’s poor and our own national security.

Harold Camping’s predictions were rejected by most Christian groups. Some churches cited the verse in ‘Matthew 24:36’ where Christ says that “about that day or hour no one knows.” Church officials continued their business and scheduled their church services as usual for Sunday, May 22. To support his arguments for the May 21 doomsday, Camping stated that he had mathematically calculated the prophecies in the Bible for decades.

As a result of his predictions, many of his followers gave up their jobs, stopped investing in their children’s education, sold their properties, and even spent huge amounts promoting his apocalyptic claims. In 2011, around 7000 ethnic Hmong Christians gathered in a desolate town in Vietnam’s Điện Biên province in early May. They had planned to wait for Christ to arrive. The Vietnamese government dispersed the gathering. Many were arrested for extremism, while hundreds were shot dead by the Vietnamese forces. The massacre was linked to false predictions by Camping.

On May 23, Camping refused to apologize for his earlier interpretations. He stated that his predictions had already been fulfilled: on May 21, 1988, the churches were judged; on September 7, 1994, judgment continued on the churches; and on May 21, 2011, the entire world was judged. After the prediction failed, media attention shifted to Camping and his followers for their responses. On May 23, Camping said that May 21 had been the Day of Judgment, and following the physical rapture on October 21, 2011, the whole universe would be destroyed by God. On October 16, however, Camping admitted to an interviewer that he was not sure when the end would come. He declined to comment publicly after October 21, when his predicted apocalypse did not occur.

It makes fewer than 100 decisions every year that have sweeping effects on American life. Not every decision has aged well. Other decisions have enforced slavery or create uneven schooling in the US. Most recently, the court overturned a landmark case that legalized abortion in 1973. Here are 45 of the most important cases the Supreme Court has ever decided.

Marbury v. Madison (1803)

The case: Before President Thomas Jefferson took office in 1801, lame duck John Adams and Congress created new courts and appointed dozens of judges, including William Marbury as Justice of the Peace in the District of Columbia. But the new administration's Secretary of State James Madison wouldn't validate the appointment. So Marbury sued.

The decision: The justices ruled unanimously that Madison's refusal was illegal, and that the law Marbury had sued under was also unconstitutional. More importantly, this ruling held that the Supreme Court had the power of "judicial review" to decide whether a law or executive action is constitutional. This essentially gave the high court the legal authority for every decision it would make in the future.

The case: In 1808, New York state gave Aaron Ogden a 20-year license to operate his steamboats on waters within the state. Thomas Gibson, another steam boat operator and Ogden's former business partner, was also working in the area, with a license from the federal government. Ogden claimed Gibbons was undercutting his business by unfairly competing. He wanted Gibbons to stop operating, and argued his license was enforceable, even though it was on interstate waters. Gibbons argued that the US Constitution gave Congress power over interstate commerce.

The decision: The Supreme Court unanimously held states cannot interfere with Congress's ability to regulate commerce. State laws had to yield to constitutional acts by Congress, so the court ruled in Gibbon's favor. It was an important early decision finding that federal governments had the ability to determine interstate commerce.

The case: In 1828, Georgia passed laws prohibiting anyone except Native Americans from living on Native American land. Samuel Worcester, a missionary, was living on Native American land and refused to apply for a license. He was arrested and appealed, arguing his removal was a violation of his constitutional rights, as Georgia had no jurisdiction on Native American land.

The decision: The Supreme Court held, 5-1, that the Cherokee Nation was a sovereign "distinct community." It struck down the Georgia law prohibiting white people living on Native American land. The case was important because it set out the relationship between tribes, states, and the federal government. It meant that interaction with Native American states became a federal process, and provided some sovereignty when interacting with the US government.

But it wasn't always enforced. Then-President Andrew Jackson said, "John Marshall has issued his decision. Let him enforce it."

The case: In 1785, Massachusetts gave the Charles River Bridge Company a charter to build a bridge between Boston and Cambridge. In exchange for covering the costs of building and maintaining it, the company could collect tolls until the charter ended.

But in 1828, a second company was authorized to build a competing bridge that would be free to the public, Charles River Bridge sought an injunction to prevent the second bridge from being built.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-2 that the authority given to Charles River never granted them a monopoly, and that general welfare would be enhanced with a second bridge. The court said the responsibility of government was to promote the happiness and prosperity of the community.

The case: This case arose from a suit brought by a slave in Missouri named Dred Scott. Scott had lived for a time in the free state of Illinois. When his master died in 1849, he sued the widow, arguing his time in the slave-free state made him a free man.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 7-2 that since Scott's ancestors were imported into the US and sold as slaves, he could not be an American citizen. Since he wasn't a citizen, he had no jurisdiction to sue, which also meant that black people living free in the north were barred from federal courts. The court also held that under the Fifth Amendment, slaves were property, and any law that deprived a slave-owner of their property was unconstitutional.

The decision is thought to be one of the factors that led to the Civil War.

The case: In 1871, Illinois passed legislation that set the maximum rate private companies could charge for storing and transporting agricultural goods. Munn, a grain warehouse, charged too much and was found guilty of violating the law. It appealed, arguing the regulation was an unconstitutional removal of property.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 7-2 that the law was constitutional, and that the state can regulate private industries when it affects the public. Since storage facilities were devoted to the public, they could be regulated. This case allowed states to regulate businesses within their borders. It was important because it showed how private enterprises could be publicly regulated.

The case: Homer Plessy, who was black under Louisiana law of the time, boarded a train and sat in a car that was reserved for white passengers. When he refused to move, he was arrested. Plessy argued that the Separate Car Act, which required all railroads to provide equal but separate accommodation, was violating his rights under the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 7-1 that "separate but equal" accommodations for whites and blacks did not violate the 14th Amendment.

Justice John Marshall Harlan, known as the "great dissenter," wrote that the Constitution was color-blind, and the US had no class system. "There is in this country no superior, dominant, ruling class of citizens; there is no caste here. Our Constitution is color-blind, and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens," he wrote. Despite his dissent, the decision solidified the "separate but equal" doctrine for the next six decades.

The case: In 1897, New York passed a labor law limiting the working week for bakers to 60 hours. Joseph Lochner, a Bavarian baker, was fined twice, because his employees worked more than 60 hours. Lochner appealed, arguing the law was unconstitutional.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that the New York law was unconstitutional. The court said the law interfered with the contract between an employer and and his employees.

This decision was widely condemned. For the next three decades, the court struck down minimum wage laws, rights to organize, and child safety laws using Lochner as precedent, before reversing course and allowing such laws.

Abrams v. United States (1919)

The case: In New York, five Russian anti-war activists were arrested under the 1917 Espionage Act for printing and distributing 5,000 leaflets that criticized the US's role in World War I. They also advocated for a general strike, and had put out a call to arms if the US intervened in Russia. They were sentenced to prison for up to 20 years. They appealed.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 7-2 that the Espionage Act was valid, and that it was a crime to willfully publish "disloyal" language about US politics, arguing that such speech was not protected by the First Amendment.

One of the most important things to come out of this case is Justice Holmes' dissenting opinion. He argued that the government should only regulate people's expression when it was required to save the country.

Commonwealth of Massachusetts v. Mellon (1923)

The case: The 1921 Maternity Act gave states money for programs aimed to help mothers and their infants. A woman named Frothingham thought the act would lead to an increase in her taxes, so she tried to sue the federal government. The issue was whether a taxpayer had standing to sue, when the only injury was going to be an increase in taxes.

The decision: The Supreme Court unanimously held she did not have standing because the injury was too small and indeterminable. It led to the legal concept of a "particularized" injury, which needs to be traced to a legal violation. Without this decision, it would be a lot easier to take a suit to court.

The case: A young woman named Carrie Buck was diagnosed with "feeble mindedness," and committed to a state institution after she was raped by her foster parent's nephew, and had his child. Her mother had also been diagnosed as feeble minded. Under the 1924 Virginia Eugenical Sterilization Act, she was to be sterilized against her will, since she was seen as unfit to procreate. Buck's appointed guardian sued, hoping to have the Supreme Court find sterilization constitutional.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 8-1 that there was nothing in the Eighth or 14th Amendments that said Carrie Buck could not be sterilized.

In his opinion, Justice Oliver Holmes wrote, "It is better for all the world, if instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime, or let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from breeding their kind. The principle that sustains compulsory vaccination is broad enough to cover cutting Fallopian tubes … Three generations of imbeciles are enough."

After this case, sterilizations did not cease until the 1960s, and more than 60,000 people were sterilized without their consent. The case has never been overturned.

Near v. Minnesota (1931)

The case: The 1925 Public Nuisance Bill, also known as the "Minnesota gag law," allowed judges to close down newspapers that were deemed obscene or slanderous. In 1927, the Saturday Press, a newspaper based in Minneapolis, began to publish articles attacking several public officials. One of them accused a politician named Floyd B. Olson of being a pawn to a conspiracy. Olson filed a complaint. A judge, using the 1925 law, issued a temporary restraining order against the newspaper. The newspaper appealed under the First Amendment's right to a free press.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that the Public Nuisance law was unconstitutional. Chief Justice Hughes wrote, "This statute ... raises questions of grave importance transcending the local interests involved in the particular action. It is no longer open to doubt that the liberty of the press and of speech is within the liberty safeguarded by the due process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment from invasion of state action."

The case stopped journalists from being censored, and enabled the press to fulfill its role as watchdog, including the printing of the Pentagon Papers in 1971.

Wickard v. Filburn (1942)

The case: The Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938, enacted to stabilize agricultural prices after the Great Depression, restricted how much wheat could be grown, to avoid another recession. The Department of Agriculture fined Roscoe Filburn, a wheat farmer in Ohio, for growing too much. He sued, arguing Congress didn't have the authority, since he'd never planned to sell all of the wheat. The issue was whether Congress had the authority to regulate local wheat production.

The decision: The Supreme Court unanimously held that Congress had the power to regulate activities in the industry, and within states, when the activities had substantial effects on interstate commerce. So, even though Filburn's wheat wasn't all going to make it into the market, growing it still altered supply and demand in a national market.

This case led to the federal government having more power to regulate the economy, and also enabled federal regulation of things like workplace safety and civil rights. Not everyone has been in favor of this case. Notably, the late Justice Antonia Scalia used to laugh at it.

Brown v. Board of Education (1954)

The case: In the 1950s, Linda Brown had to take a dangerous route to school, because the only school that was closer was for white students. Her father, Oliver Brown, believed this was a breach of the 14th Amendment, which says, "no state can deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." Brown, along with a dozen other parents, challenged the segregation policy on behalf of their 20 children.

The decision: The Supreme Court unanimously held that separate educational facilities were inherently unequal. A second decision called for lower courts and school boards to proceed with desegregation. This decision knocked down the doctrine of "separate but equal" from Plessy v. Ferguson, which had allowed mixed race schools, transportation, and facilities to exist as long as they were "equal."

The Atlantic described Chief Justice Earl Warren's "ringing opinion" as "the belated mid course correction that began America's transformation into a truly multiracial world nation."

Mapp v. Ohio (1961)

The case: When Ohio police thought a suspected bomber was hiding out in Dollree Mapp's house, they forced their way in without a warrant. When Mapp asked where the warrant was, they held up a piece of paper. In their search of her house, they found pornographic materials. They arrested Mapp and later convicted her for being in possession of obscene materials. She appealed.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 6-3 that any violation of the Fourth Amendment's right against unlawful searches and seizures made evidence inadmissible in court. Justice Clark wrote in his majority opinion that "the exclusionary rule," which prohibits the use of illegally obtained evidence in criminal trials, was essential.

This case has led to the redefining of the rights of people being accused and limits how police can obtain evidence.

Engel v. Vitale (1962)

The case: In New York, schools adopted a daily prayer after it was required by state law. Some parents argued it was a violation of individuals' rights, but the school board said it wasn't, since students could opt out. Five families led by parent Steven Engel disagreed, and sued on the basis that it violated the religion clause of the First Amendment.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 6-1 that reading an official prayer at school violated the constitution, because it was an "establishment of religion." Justice Hugo Black wrote for the majority: "It is a matter of history that this very practice of establishing governmentally composed prayers for religious services was one of the reasons which caused many of our early colonists to leave England and seek religious freedom in America."

The case meant any state-enforced prayer, or reading of the bible in a public school would be suspected. It also was a key case showing the enforcement of separation between church and state.

Gideon v. Wainwright (1963)

The case: Clarence Earl Gideon was charged with breaking and entering a pool hall. He requested a lawyer to defend him, but Florida's state court rejected him. After defending himself poorly Gideon went to prison. Giddeon appealed, and the issue was whether the right to counsel extended to felony defendants in state courts.

The decision: The Supreme Court held unanimously that state courts were required to appoint attorneys for those who could not afford their own counsel.

The US justice system would not be what it is today without this decision. The decision affirms that "lawyers in criminals courts are necessities, not luxuries." However, the quality of criminal defense services varies across the country.

Reynold v. Sims (1964)

The case: This case stemmed from the apportionment scheme in Alabama. Under the 14th Amendment, each voter's intentions are meant to have equal weight, but in Alabama, legislative districts were no longer accurately representing the amount of people who lived in them, especially in the cities, where populations had grown rapidly. The issue was whether this breached the "equal protection clause" in the 14th Amendment.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 8-1 that Alabama's apportionment scheme had breached the 14th Amendment. The justices ruled that the right to vote is a fundamental right, and equal participation is crucial. Chief Justice Warren wrote for the majority: "legislators represent people, not trees or acres."

This decision made the government more democratic.

Heart of Atlanta Motel v. US (1964)

The case: The Heart of Atlanta Motel in Georgia refused to provide accommodation for black people, but the Civil Rights Act of 1964 banned the practice. Two hours after the act was passed, the motel asked the court to stop the enforcement of a clause in Title II, which forbid racist discrimination by public accommodation providers. The motel argued it exceeded Congress's power.

The decision: The Supreme Court held unanimously that the act was not exceeding Congress's power. It reasoned that discrimination by businesses had a big impact on black people traveling, even when it was a small business, since negative effects could be far-reaching when added up. It was especially the case here, since 75% of the guests staying at the motel came from out of state.

This was the first case to challenge the Civil Rights Act, and by upholding it, the act was legitimatized and strengthened. The law would go on to be used to dismantle many other forms of racist discrimination.

New York Times v. Sullivan (1964)

The case: This case was about an advertisement titled "Heed Their Rising Voices" that was published in The New York Times in 1960. The ad was looking for donations to defend Martin Luther King Jr. and criticized the Montgomery police. The ad had factual errors, and L.B. Sullivan, a Montgomery city commissioner, sued The Times for defamation, though he wasn't mentioned. In Alabama, Sullivan won and The Times was ordered to pay $500,000. The paper appealed.

The decision: The Supreme Court held unanimously that while regular defamation requires that a defendant knows a statement is false or reckless, when it's a public figure, the defendant must act with "actual malice" — meaning they must know it was false or have a "reckless disregard" for the truth.

This decision strengthens the freedom of the American press, which has the strongest protections in the world, ensuring debate on public issues is robust and open.

Miranda v. Arizona (1966)

The case: In 1963, police obtained a written confession from Ernesto Miranda that said he had kidnapped and raped a woman. However, they had not advised Miranda of his right to have an attorney present during the interrogation. Miranda appealed on the basis that his confession had been gained unconstitutionally.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that law enforcement must advise suspects of their right to remain silent, their right to an attorney, and that anything they say can and will be used against them in a court of law. Evidence could not be used in a trial unless the warnings had been given and knowingly waived.

Police work, and the well-known "you have the right to remain silent" would not be so firmly entrenched into society (or TV shows and movies) without this decision. People know their rights, and police know they have to read them to suspects.

Loving v. Virginia (1967)

The case: Mildred Jeter, a black woman, and Richard Loving, a white man, were from Virginia, where inter-racial marriage was illegal. In 1958, they got married in D.C. and then returned home. On their return, they were charged with breaking the law and sentenced to one year in prison. A judge suspended their sentence as long as they didn't return to the state together for 25 years. Loving wrote to then-Attorney General Robert Kennedy and asked for his help, and he referred them to the ACLU, which helped them sue.

The decision: In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court held that the law was unconstitutional under the 14th Amendment. Chief Justice Warren wrote, "Under our constitution the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual, and cannot be infringed by the state."

In a watershed moment for civil rights, the case found that people of any race, anywhere in the US, can get married, striking down laws banning inter-racial marriage in 16 states. The case was later cited in same-sex marriage cases.

Terry v. Ohio (1968)

The case: In 1963, three men were suspiciously walking back and forth in a block in Cleveland, Ohio, and a detective thought they were preparing to rob a store. He approached them, identified himself, then frisked them and found two concealed guns. One of the men was convicted for having the gun. The man appealed. The issue was whether police frisking violated the Fourth Amendment.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 8-1 that the search was reasonable since the men were acting suspiciously, warranting inquiry. If circumstances justify a belief that an individual is armed and dangerous, the justices ruled, the officer may pat down the outside of an individual's clothing.

Justice William O. Douglas, the lone dissenter, did not think the standard for search and seizures should have been lowered from "probable cause" to "reasonable suspicion." He wrote: "Yet if the individual is no longer to be sovereign, if the police can pick him up whenever they do not like the cut of his jib, if they can 'seize' and 'search' him in their discretion, we enter a new regime. The decision to enter it should be made only after a full debate by the people of this country."

This case opened up the police's ability to investigate activity they deem suspicious.

Brandenburg v. Ohio (1969)

The case: Clarence Brandenburg was arrested after making racist remarks and claiming the government was suppressing the "Caucasian race" to a gathering of Ku Klux Klan members in a field in Ohio. He also mentioned action might need to be taken, and was filmed by media he had invited to the gathering. The state law criminalized advocating violence as a means of accomplishing political reform, and he was sentenced to up to 10 years prison. The issue was whether speech advocating for violence was protected by the First Amendment.

The decision: The Supreme Court held per curiam, which means in the name of the court rather than the judges, that his freedom of speech had been violated. It found that speech may only be outlawed when it is directly inciting "imminent lawless action." It also found that abstract discussions are not the same as actual preparation to engage in violence. This case broadened protections for political dissent.

Phillips v. Martin Marietta Corp. (1971)

The case: Ida Phillips applied for a job at the Martin Marietta Corporation, a missile plant in Orlando. She had seven children, and the business had a hiring policy excluding mothers with pre-school children, believing them to be unreliable. Phillips alleged she'd been denied employment because of her sex. The issue was whether this was discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The case was complicated, because the company hired women for the job, just not women with young children.

The decision: The Supreme Court unanimously held that it was discriminatory, since it was based on the sex of the applicant, even if it was about motherhood.

However, it did send the case back to lower courts to give the corporation a chance to present evidence about the impeded ability of mothers with young children. And the judges were uneasy about the idea that both sexes were equally equipped to do all jobs. Justice Hugo Black asked Phillips' lawyer, "Does the law require that the employer give the woman a job of digging ditches and things of that kind?"

All nine justices at the time were men.

Wisconsin v. Yoder (1972)

The case: In Wisconsin, children were required by law to attend school until they were 16. But three Amish families refused to send their children to school after eighth grade, when most children are 14, resulting in $5 fines from the state. (Amish families think the content of secondary and higher education conflicts with their life of austerity.) They argued the compulsory attendance violated their rights under the First Amendment, specifically the Free Exercise Clause.

The decision: The Supreme Court held unanimously that the Amish families' right to religious freedom was not overridden by the state's interest in education. It held that sending the children to high school would threaten the Amish way of life. Freedom of religion was seen as more important than the state's interest in education, and this case created an exception for Amish people, and others in similar situations.

The justices agreed overall on the ruling, but Justice William O. Douglas filed a partial dissent arguing that the children's viewpoint wasn't being considered, worried that they may miss out on an education if they're not asked whether they want to go to high school.

Roe v. Wade (1973)

The case: This case stemmed from a Texas law that said abortion was illegal unless, by doctor's orders, it was to save a woman's life. An anonymous plaintiff called Jane Roe (who was later identified as Norma McCorvey) filed against the Dallas County district attorney, arguing the law was unconstitutional.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 7-2 that overly restrictive legislation around abortion was unconstitutional. Based on a right to privacy in the 14th Amendment, the state was not allowed to regulate a woman's decision.

This case overruled any laws that made abortion illegal before a fetus was viable, giving women more power when it comes to their bodies and having children. It made access to abortion a constitutional right.

San Antonio Independent School District v. Rodriguez (1973)

The case: In the late 1960s, schools in Texas could use local property taxes to boost revenue. So schools that were based in poorer areas had less revenue, because the property taxes were lower. A class-action suit was filed on behalf of children living in poorer areas. The issue here was whether the system violated the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that there is no constitutional right to an equal education. The opinion said it should not be unconstitutional, because "burdens or benefits" fall unevenly, depending on the wealth of the areas in which citizens live.

In Time Magazine's list of the worst Supreme Court cases since 1960, the editors concluded this case enforced the idea that discrimination against the poor did not violate the Constitution, and education wasn't a fundamental right.

United States v. Nixon (1974)

The case: This case was triggered by the Watergate scandal, when a special prosecutor asked for tapes that President Richard Nixon had recorded in the White House. He refused, saying he had "executive privilege" that allowed him to withhold sensitive information in order to maintain confidential communications and to maintain national security. Nixon released edited versions, but not the complete tapes, leading to Nixon and the prosecutor both filing petitions to be heard in the Supreme Court.

The decision: The Supreme Court held unanimously that while there was limited executive privilege for military or diplomacy reasons, it wasn't enough in this case. Nixon had to hand over the tapes. The case led to Nixon's resignation, and also ensures that the president does not have unlimited privilege to withhold information from other branches of government. "Not even the president is above the law," Harvard constitutional law professor Laurence Tribe said.

O'Conner v. Donaldson (1975)

The case: After Kenneth Donaldson told his parents he thought his neighbor was poisoning his food, he was examined and diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Against his will, he was committed to a state hospital for the next 15 years. During that time, two different people volunteered to be responsible for him, but the hospital refused to release him. He sued, saying the hospital staff had "intentionally and maliciously deprived him of his right to liberty."

The decision: The Supreme Court held unanimously that mental patients could not be confined in institutions against their will, if they weren't dangerous and were capable of surviving in society. In the opinion, Justice Potter Stewart wrote: "May the state fence in the harmless mentally ill solely to save its citizens from exposure to those whose ways are different? One might as well ask if the state, to avoid public unease, could incarcerate all who are physically unattractive or socially eccentric."

The decision established the legal threshold for people posing a danger to themselves or others.

Buckley v. Valeo (1976)

The case: This was a case about freedom of speech, in particular about spending limits by, or for, candidates running for office. Sen. James L. Buckley, and a coalition of groups, filed a suit arguing that the Federal Election Campaign Act, which limited spending and required spending disclosures, weren't constitutional.

The decision: The court held per curiam that independent spending was a form of political speech protected by the First Amendment. However, it also concluded that contributions could be capped. This is an important decision for campaign spending. It helped lead the way to the rising of political action committees, or PACs. It also led to the enforcement of reporting campaign spending.

The case: Several plaintiffs, including the First National Bank of Boston, wanted to challenge a proposed increase on personal income taxes for high-wage earners in Massachusetts. The plaintiffs wanted to pay for advertising to criticize it, but they could only spend money if they were "materially affected," based on a Massachusetts law, which restricted what corporations could spend in politics. Attorney General Francis Bellotti said the bank wasn't materially affected. The plaintiffs challenged the constitutionality of the provision.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that the Massachusetts law was unconstitutional. The court concluded that the First Amendment protected corporations, since they were made up of shareholders who decided their corporation should engage on public issues. This case opened the door to Citizens United.

Regents of the University of California v. Bakke (1978)

The case: Allan Bakke, a 35-year-old Vietnam war veteran, was rejected from medical school at the University of California twice. Every year, the school accepted 100 people, and 16 of those accepted were from "minority groups." He argued his rejections were due to "reverse racism", since his grades were better than the 16 people who got in on minority seats.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that Bakke should be admitted. However, it also said race could be taken into account to promote diversity on campuses.

Six different justices wrote opinions. In one opinion, Justice Harry Blackmun wrote: "In order to get beyond racism, we must first take account of race. There is no other way. And in order to treat some persons equally, we must treat them differently."

Since this case, despite affirming that race could be taken into account, the percentage of black freshman in the US has not changed. A 2017 analysis found they make up 6% of freshmen, but are 15% of college-age Americans.

Strickland v. Washington (1984)

The case: David Washington was sentenced to death after he pleaded guilty to murder. But this case arose out of what his lawyer didn't do during the trial. His lawyer failed to call any character witnesses or get a psychiatric evaluation. Washington appealed, arguing his counsel's assistance was constitutionally ineffective.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 8-1 that ineffective counsel only violated the Sixth Amendment when the performance was deficient. For this, counsel assistance had to fall below an objective reasonableness standard, and there needed to be a "reasonable probability" the result would have been different had counsel not failed.

Justice Thurgood Marshall wrote in dissent: "My objection to the performance standard adopted by the Court is that it is so malleable that, in practice, it will either have no grip at all or will yield excessive variation ... To tell lawyers and the lower courts that counsel for a criminal defendant must behave 'reasonably' and must act like 'a reasonably competent attorney' is to tell them almost nothing."

This case makes it difficult for defendants to prove ineffective assistance claims, since they need to show that it's outside the range of professional competence and that the client was prejudiced by it.

The case: In 1977, Congress added an amendment to the Clean Air Act, requiring states to establish programs to reduce power plant pollution. In the amendment, entire power plants were treated as a single unit within a "bubble", even if they had multiple smoke stacks. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) thought the bubble interpretation dulled the law, and sued the EPA.

The decision: The Supreme Court held unanimously that the bubble policy was valid. It found that if the law is clear then agencies must follow it, and when a a law does not have a clear meaning, the courts should defer to the federal agency's interpretation of the law.

This is one of the most cited Supreme Court decisions of all time, and this standard became known as the "Chevron Defense."

Texas v. Johnson (1989)

The case: During a protest in 1984 against then-President Ronald Reagan and local corporations in Dallas, Gregory Johnson covered the American flag in kerosene then lit it on fire, offending witnesses. He was arrested and charged with desecrating a venerated object, which was banned under Texas law. He was sentenced to one year in prison and ordered to pay $2,000. He appealed, on the basis that the law was in breach of his First Amendment rights.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that burning the flag was protected under the First Amendment. In the majority opinion, Justice Brennan wrote: "if there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable ... We do not consecrate the flag by punishing its desecration, for in doing so we dilute the freedom that this cherished emblem represents."

Despite former President George H. Bush proposing to add an anti flag burning amendment to the constitution, this case still protects unpopular political expression in the US today.

Michael H. v Gerald D. (1989)

The case: A man, for the purposes of the case named Michael, had an affair with a woman who later had a child. Blood tests indicated he was the father. He wanted visitation rights, but under California law, the child is presumed to be from the marriage, and another person can only challenge that within the child's first two years of life. Michael was too late, and sued. The issue was whether the California law violated the man's chance to establish paternity.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that a biological father does not have a fundamental right to obtain parental rights, after the presumed father had acted in a responsible way for the child. A woman's husband is to be presumed father of her children, regardless of anyone else's claim.

Cruzan v. Director of the Missouri Department of Health (1990)

The case: In 1983, Nancy Cruzan, a 25-year-old woman, was in a car crash that resulted in her falling into a vegetative state. She was on life support for five years, and had no chance of recovery, but doctors estimated she could have lived on life support for another 30 years. Her parents asked for her to be disconnected, but the hospital refused without a court order. Before the car crash, Nancy had said she would not want to live if she were sick or injured and could not live "at least halfway normally." Her parents asked for a court order to remove her from life support.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that there was a right to die, but the state had the right to stop the family, unless there was "clear and convincing" evidence that it was her wish to die.

This was the first time the court had ruled on a right-to-die case. It didn't set national guidelines, and left it to be decided on a state-by-state basis. In the month after the case, 300,000 requests were made for advance-directive forms, so people could make it known in advance what should happen to them if they became incapacitated.

Lawrence v. Texas (2003)

The case: Police entered a private residence on a false report about a weapons disturbance, and found Lawrence and Garner engaging in a consensual sexual act. They were arrested and convicted under Texas law, which forbid two people of the same sex to have sex. The issue for this case was whether the 14th Amendment protected them.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 6-3 that the Texas law violated their right to liberty, under the "Due Process Clause," which allowed them to engage in their conduct without government intervention.

This was seen as a victory for LGBT rights, removing what one law professor called "the reflexive assumption of gay people's inferiority," and overturning 14 state laws across the US.

The case: After a fight at home between a separated couple, a woman called the police and told them to come in, then showed them cocaine she said her husband was using. The husband was later charged with possession, even though he had told the police they couldn't come in. The issue was whether the police can search a home without a warrant when one person gives consent, but the other refuses.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-3 that in at least a few circumstances the right to search and enter is not valid if one of the occupants says they can't, ruling in the husband's favor.

This case narrows the scope for when police can enter and search homes without warrants. They can still enter to protect someone from harm or to chase a fleeing suspect, for example.

Massachusetts v. Environmental Protection Agency (2007)

The case: This case came about in 1999, when Massachusetts, 11 other states, and several environmental organizations petitioned for the EPA to start regulating carbon dioxide coming out of new motor vehicles, since it was a pollutant. The EPA denied the petition, saying it did not have the legal authority to regulate it.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that the EPA had the right to regulate heat-trapping gases coming from automobiles, and that the Clean Air Act's definition of air pollutant had been written with sweeping language so that it would not become obsolete.

According to James Salzman, a professor of law and environmental policy at Duke University, the majority's acknowledgement of climate change science put this case on the legal map. And since it made it almost impossible for the EPA not to regulate, the decision sent a message to other agencies that they also had to deal with climate change.

District of Columbia v. Heller (2008)

The case: Richard Heller, a security guard who lived in D.C. and carried a gun for work, was not allowed to have a gun at home, due to the city's laws. He thought the laws were too restricting and made it impossible to defend himself. Heller, along with five others, sued, arguing it was a violation of the Second Amendment. They were funded by Robert Levy, a libertarian lawyer from the Cato Institute.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that the Second Amendment guaranteed an individual's right to possess a firearm at home for self-defense. It was the first time in 70 years the Supreme Court ruled on the Second Amendment.

In 2019, former-Justice John Paul Stevens said it was the worst decision during his 34-year tenure, representing "the worst self-inflicted wound in the Court's history." He said an amendment should be added to the Constitution to overrule the case, to stop gun massacres like what had happened in Las Vegas or Sandy Hook.

Citizens United v. FEC (2010)

The case: A non-profit organization called Citizens United made a disparaging film about Hilary Clinton and they wanted to run an advertisement for it during the 2008 election. But the Federal Election Campaign Act banned corporations and unions from spending money to advocate during elections. So Citizens United couldn't show the film since it mentioned Clinton, who was a presidential candidate at the time. Citizens United argued the ban was unconstitutional.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that corporations and unions can spend as much as they like to convince people to vote for or against political candidates, as long as the spending is independent of the candidates. The ruling gave corporations protections under the First Amendment's right to free speech.

Justice John Paul Stevens wrote in dissent of the ruling, that it was "a rejection of the common sense of the American people," and a threat to democracy.

The decision changed how politics works in the US. In the 2014 senate elections, outside spending had more than doubled to $486 million since 2010.

National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius (2012)

The case: President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Care Act into law in 2010 to increase the number of Americans covered by health insurance, and to decrease the cost of healthcare. Twenty-six states, several people, and the National Federation of Independent Business sued to overturn the law. The first issue was whether it was legal to require people to purchase health insurance with an individual mandate. The second was whether a provision forcing states to cover more people or lose federal funding was unconstitutionally coercive.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that the individual mandate was legitimate, because it was in essence a tax, and struck down the provision that would withhold funds for states which did not expand the program.

It wasn't without dissent, though. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote that the decision was a "vast judicial overreaching," which would create a "debilitated, inoperable version of health care regulation."

Obergefell v. Hodges (2015)

The case: James Obergefell and John Arthur, a couple from Ohio, got married in Maryland. In Ohio, same-sex marriage was not allowed on death certificates. Arthur was chronically ill and wanted to have Obergefell on his death certificate. Along with three couples from Kentucky, Michigan, and Tennessee, they sued their states, claiming they were in breach of the Equal Protection Clause in the 14th Amendment, which says, "no state shall ... deny to any citizen within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

The decision: The Supreme Court held 5-4 that the 14th Amendment guarantees the right to marry, including same-sex marriages. Every state in the US now legally recognizes same-sex marriage. Before this case, 13 states still had a ban on gay marriage.

Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization (2022)

The case: In March 2018, the Jackson Women's Health Organization, Mississippi's only abortion clinic since 2006, sued the state for enacting a law that banned abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The lawsuit argued that the rule was unconstitutional due to the precedent set by the Supreme Court, including Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Dobbs refers to Dr. Thomas E. Dobbs, the state's Department of Health officer, but he had little to do with the overall case.

The decision: The Supreme Court held 6-3 to uphold the Mississippi law. However, on top of the ruling, five of the justices in the majority opinion also ruled to overturn Roe, repealing a landmark case that made abortion legal in the US for nearly five decades. Chief Justice John Roberts was the only member of the court's conservative majority who believed the court should not have outright overruled Roe.
