The Haskell Free Library and Opera House has a curious line painted through the building. What does this line signify? One side of the line lies in Quebec, Canada, while the other is in the state of Vermont in the United States. Because of this, the building has two main entrances on either side of the border. The building also has two different addresses and telephone area codes. Further, because of the layout of the building, it's jokingly referred to as "the only library in the U.S. with no books and the only opera house in the U.S. with no stage" (the library and the stage are on the Canadian side, while most of the audience of the opera sits in the U.S.). If you're wondering, people inside can freely cross the line marking the border, but if they then exit the building, they are required to report to Customs, but otherwise are free to traverse one side of the building or the other without such notification. Intentionally built on the border in the early 20th century, the building was placed such as Mrs. Martha Stewart Haskell and Col. Horace "Stewart" Haskell wanted both Canadians and U.S. citizens to have access to the library and opera house.

The pen. The clink. The slammer. The joint. The cooler. The nick. The big house. The hoosegow. Whatever you call it, it is the place most of us dread ending up: prison. A central pillar of our modern justice system, prisons loom large in the popular imagination, inspiring whole genres of literature, music, and film; and even entire schools of philosophical thought. They are entire insular worlds unto themselves, potent symbols for the nature of freedom, justice, and humanity itself. But more than just institutions or buildings, prisons are also a form of technology, whose function is to contain, control, and - hopefully - reform and rehabilitate large numbers of people as efficiently as possible. As a result, over the past two centuries prison design has seen plenty of innovation, ranging from the practical to the ingenious to the downright bizarre. And few prison designs were stranger than an 1880s contraption that enclosed its prisoners in what can only be described as a giant rotating squirrel cage. While several of these innovative structures were constructed across the midwestern United States, they proved impractical and reliable, and became but a minor yet fascinating footnote in the history of criminal justice. This is the strange tale of the rotary jail.

,1,Early heart disease deaths rise to 14-year high
Over 100,000 excess deaths involving cardiovascular conditions in England since February 2020
Heart and circulatory diseases cause around a quarter of all deaths in England,
Over 140,000 deaths each year,
or one death every four minutes.
Healthcare costs relating to heart and circulatory diseases, £8.3 billion each year.
The cost of cardiovascular disease to the wider economy in England,
(including premature death, disability and informal costs),
is estimated to be £22 billion each year.
Latest NHS England figures show that the number of people waiting for cardiac care at the end of November in England was 402,208.
The heart care waiting list is 72% larger than in February 2020.
This is an increase of 169,000 people – enough to fill Wembley stadium nearly twice over.
In 2022
Over 39,000 people in England died prematurely of cardiovascular conditions,
heart attacks, coronary heart disease and stroke,
an average of 750 people each week.
It is the highest annual total since 2008.
Since 2020, the premature death rate for cardiovascular disease has risen year-on-year
This is the first time there has been a clear reversal in the trend for almost 60 years.
The BHF says more analysis is needed to understand what is driving the trend.
Dr Sonya Babu-Narayan, Associate Medical Director at the BHF and Consultant Cardiologist, said:
We are still seeing more people than expected die from cardiovascular conditions overall – more than any other disease group.
It’s clear to me that urgent intervention is long overdue.
In January 2023, the Government announced a Major Conditions Strategy to tackle the biggest drivers of ill health and early death in England
