Migrants removed from Bibby Stockholm barge after bacteria found

Asylum seekers have been removed from the Bibby Stockholm barge in Dorset after Legionella bacteria were found in the water. Legionella bacteria, commonly found in water, can cause a serious type of pneumonia known as Legionnaires’ disease. The Home Office said all 39 asylum seekers on the Bibby Stockholm had been taken off “as a precautionary measure”, but none are ill. Robert Jenrick, the immigration minister, is understood to be holding meetings about the situation. The testing for Legionella bacteria was done before asylum seekers went aboard, but the results – showing levels of Legionella bacteria that required further investigation – only came back this week, according to Home Office sources.
