Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) warns about a rise in antisemitism after the start of the war between Hamas and Israel, calling it a "five-alarm fire that must be extinguished." He says Americans, especially young Americans, must understand why Jewish people defend Israel. It is “not because we wish harm on Palestinians, but because we fear a world where Israel is forced to tolerate the existence of groups like Hamas that want to wipe out all Jewish people from the planet.” More hostages are set free from Gaza on this sixth day of an agreed-upon pause in fighting, as talks continue about whether the truce will be extended, as families of hostages testify before a U.S. House subcommittee in Washington, DC, describing their ordeal.
