In September of 1985, a US Air Force F-15 shot down a satellite in orbit using an ASM-135 Anti-Satellite missile. In November of 2021, Russia followed suit — shooting down their own satellite with a ground-launched anti-sat missile. Why was the 1985 test considered less controversial? The answer comes down to one thing: Kessler Syndrome.
