It also includes a segment on women's professional baseball, which flourished for a time during WWII and for a few short years afterwards. The film was originally produced by Pathé News, Inc., a newsreel and documentary producer originally based in the UK and France, which maintained a USA operation. Jay Bonafield produced this film, directed by Joseph Walsh, narrated by Red Barber, edited by David Cooper, and written by Jerry Brondfield, with music by Fred Van Eps, Jr. ”Sportscope” title banner (00:07). “Athletic Items” title banner (00:10). They catch a ray (02:00). A teacher, Muriel Smith - who was also runner-up in the Miss America pageant -- is shown teaching math in a classroom, while students take notes (02:05). The teacher is walking outside (02:24). She is walking in a bathing suit towards a diving board (02:31). She takes off her shoes and puts on a swimming cap (02:37) and then climbs the stairs to the diving board (02:56). The dives of the board backward doing a backflip (03:06). She performs a different dive off the board (03:20). Patrol torpedo (PT boats) boats cruising on Biscayne Bay with famed sportsman Gar Wood aboard; also piloting is Miss Betty Carstairs - renowned woman speedboat racer (03:28). A game of women's baseball (04:10). A group of young women entering through a gate to a baseball stadium (04:42). They changed into their baseball uniforms. These women are part of the South Bend Blue Sox, a women's professional baseball team who played from 1943 through 1954 in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. (04:55). They’ve gathered in the field and are speaking with their coach (05:03). Three different sized baseballs, showing a softball, baseball, and women's baseball (05:14). They practice batting (05:20) and fielding the ball (05:39). Charles "Pepper" Stis, the manager for the Racine Belles, is an ex-professional baseball player, as is Marty McManus of the South Bend team. Connie Wisniewski of Grand Rapids, a right hander, is pitching the ball (05.47), followed by another team member Charlotte "Skipper" Armstrong of South Bend (06:07). A game begins (06:25). The spectators watching the game are cheering from the bleachers (06:35). Team members seated on the bench are also cheering (06:46). The game continues (07:06). “The end” written on screen (07:48).
