“Oppenheimer”- a movie about the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who led the team that made the first atomic bomb, is a box office hit this season. It’s a serious movie that surprisingly is right up there with mass market favorites like “Barbie,” “Spider Man” and "Guardians of the Galaxy". Host Sheryl McCarthy speaks with Kai Bird, co-author of “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” the book on which the movie is based. He’s also executive director of the Levy Center for Biography at CUNY. He’ll tell us why he thinks ordinary citizens are so interested in this serious man who undertook a deadly serious mission; why biography is important; and why Oppenheimer’s story offers a lesson for our time.
