Imran Khan: It's a total crackdown on my party | Conflict Zone

Pakistan's former prime minister, Imran Khan, who has been out of power since April 2022, says he's an outsider. Khan pointed to what he called two corrupt families of his political opponents and a military that has played an oversized role in Pakistan's politics, including military rulers who imposed martial law. Citing the nearly 180 criminal charges filed against him over the last year, Khan said that if not in jail, he plans to contest the country's next general election but says the current government has arrested some 10,000 party workers and that its "entire leadership is underground or in jail." Will they even let us contest it, he asked in an interview with DW's Tim Sebastian. Khan said he had never had any criminal case against him until the age of 70, and that the government has been conducting a "total crackdown" against his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party. Khan speculated about upcoming elections, telling Sebastian that “the Army is entrenched in the political system." Khan also dismissed criticism of his welcoming of the Taliban's return to power in Afghanistan, saying good relations with Kabul are important for Pakistan regardless of who is in power.
