Alex Sanchez (main) was a displaced, angry teenager in America illegally when he joined MS-13 in Los Angeles in the 1980s. It started as a group that offered company and support for immigrants - but soon got dragged into LA gang culture. Sanchez himself spent time in prison in California in the late 1980s and early 1990s (right) and was deported before deciding to leave a life of crime behind - while MS-13 expanded and became increasingly violent (inset bottom left is a picture of weapons on display at the U.S. Attorney's office in Boston in June 2016 following the arrest of 56 members of MS-13) . The gang is also responsible for a string of horrifying recent murders including the deaths of high school students and best friends Nisa Mickens (inset, left) and Kayla Cuevas (inset right) on Long Island. Four gang members have been charged with their murder. Sanchez is now the executive director of Homies Unidos, a non-profit that works with gangs and at-risk youths.
