The Prince and Princess of Wales have praised an “amazing” community that raised £30,000 for families left homeless after the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. The couple visited a Muslim centre in Hayes, west London, to meet aid workers recently returned from the disaster zone and thank those involved in the fundraising effort. Lead fundraiser, Zia Rehman, said they had broken their own 30-year fundraising record.  “Within two hours we were able to raise £18,000,” he said. “Normally it is anything between £10,000 and £12,000. But this time the community came forward amazingly. Altogether we have raised £30,000 for Turkey and Syria.” The Princess, who wore an Alexander McQueen black pleated dress and a black and white headscarf, said: “It shows the strength of the community when you are coming together and supporting each other.” In a lighter moment, the couple joined two schoolgirls who made hundreds of origami cranes to raise funds for the appeal – and guided the royals as they created the birds from paper. #princessofwales #hijab #turkey #syria #appeal #royals Subscribe to The Telegraph with our special offer: just £1 for 3 months.
