On Sunday, rocks plucked from the asteroid 101955 Bennu will land on our planet, ready to be studied by scientists who hope this sample can shine a light on our planet – and how it came to be. The sample comes to us seven years after NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft launched from Cape Canaveral, Fla. on a mission to study a near-Earth asteroid and three years after it successfully touched down on Bennu to collect a sample of an asteroid for the first time in the space agency’s history. Bennu is described as a celestial “rubbish pile” that is made up of material dating back billions of years to when the solar system was forming. And as Alyssa Julie reports, scientists believe its rocks could hold a record of that time period.
