Niger: Military intervention a viable way of restoring democracy? | DW News

Military leaders from the West African group of states, known as ECOWAS, are meeting in Ghana to discuss a possible military intervention in Niger's coup. Officials at the meeting restated the regional group's readiness to take action, to restore Niger's deposed president. They expressed frustration with the junta for refusing to hold talks. Though a standby military force has been activated, ECOWAS members say they would prefer a diplomatic solution. Niger's neighbours have already applied economic sanctions, which are beginning to bite. For more, we talk to Ulf Laessing. He is the director of the Sahel Program for Germany's Konrad Adenauer Foundation. He's based in the Malian capital Bamako but joins us tonight from Hamburg here in Germany.
