The film follows Billy, a young boy, as he takes his first helicopter ride with his uncle Joel - a trained pilot. Uncle Joel walks Billy, and the audience, through the various aspects of the helicopter and how it operates and treats him to a helicopter ride over the city of Dallas. Opening (0:06). Bell 47G-3, made by Bell Helicopter Co. (N9B, Serial 2611), sits on tarmac. Pilot uncle Joel, Billy, and his father walk towards helicopter (0:10). Billy presses face up against plastic “bubble” of helicopter, POV from camera inside cockpit looking out at Billy, his father, and uncle (0:26). Anatomy of helicopter: close-up of landing skid (0:38). Joel and Billy observe as Bell 47J-2 Ranger model helicopter lands besides the Bell 47G-3 (0:42). Close-up rotary wing as it begins to spin, Bell 47J-2 Ranger is propelled into sky (0:59). Uncle Joel shows Billy the tail rotor on his Bell 47G-3, helicopter (1:28). Uncle Joel and Billy get into pilot’s cabin, uncle Joel demonstrates how he controls rotor (2:05). Close-up control panel that controls the many instruments of the helicopter (2:12). Uncle Joel takes Billy on surprise helicopter ride, go through steps to prepare for take off including putting on safety belt, starting engine (2:33). Billy’s dad waves from airstrip as Billy and uncle take off (2:45). Billy and uncle Joel walk around rooftop to take in views before getting back into helicopter (5:00). Uncle Joel and Billy make their way back to airfield, views of boys playing games in field, people swimming in lake, perhaps Wagemaker Wolverine Boat speeding along lake “racing” the helicopter (5:40). The pair spot smoke billowing over forrest, uncle Joel puts on headset and reports fire to park rangers over radio (6:21). Helicopter as it lands back at airstrip (6:40).
