For a decade, the United States dropped more than two million tonnes of cluster munitions on Laos, in its battle against communism. These weapons remain dangerous today. Many bombs did not detonate, and they sit in the soil, in silence, until a civilian comes across them. More than 20,000 people have been killed or maimed since the end of the US campaign, many of them children. The work to clear Laos of cluster bombs has gone on for decades and will take decades more.
