After leaving Ukraine and marching towards Moscow, Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group were branded traitors – but we know now that just days after the abandoned revolt, its leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, met with Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin. “That does not look very much like the leader of the nation receiving the penitent ex-mutineer, but rather like the heads of two gangs coming together to discuss their mutual interests,” says Russian political scientist Ekaterina Schulmann. Are there more surprises coming from this so-called rebellion? And how damaged now are the power structures of the Kremlin? Is Putin being dragged along by events he no longer controls?
