AUKUS nuclear submarines are a “vital threat” against China’s plans to “dominate” south-east Asia, according to former Howard government minister Peter McGuaran. “We can choke off the South China Seas with these submarines,” Mr McGuaran told Sky News Australia. “The Chinese know if we acquire nuclear-powered submarines in conjunction with the American fleet, we can contain them to a far greater extent than they would want.”
