Knee to Know Ep. 113 Nerve pain can be described as zingers, pins and needles, jolts, burning, numbness, or electric feeling. This can be common after knee replacement. Usually the two main sources of this pain is irritated peripheral nerves in the leg and close to the knee joint or from sciatica and radiating symptoms. What can be done to manage this pain? The best thing to do is give your body time to heal and focus on your range of motion and mobility in the knee, but also in the leg and low back in general. There are also specific nerve gliding and nerve mobility exercises and stretches that help improve nerve mobility and decrease irritation. You can check these out by following the links in the corner of the video and at the end! Another pain relieving stretching is TENs or electrical stimulation. Your PT can help instruct you with using this pain relief modality and potential get you setup with a device to use at home. If your nerve pain is significant, your doctor may prescribe certain anticonvulsant medications such as gabapentin or prescription pain medicine.
