Govt to spend $350m annually to keep Nauru detention centre open

The federal government will spend up to $350 million annually to keep the Nauru offshore detention centre open even though it is currently empty. The Department of Home Affairs says keeping the facility open helps the government prepare for unauthorised arrivals and deters people-smugglers. Nine boats carrying 209 people have tried to come to Australia since May last year.
