A group of 67 women from Greenland, all victims of forced contraception, have filed a compensation case against the Danish government. They were part of at least 4,500 women and girls fitted with a contraceptive coil device without their consent. It’s thought the practice started in the 1960’s, and lasted until at least 1975. The 67 women sent the compensation claim to Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Girls as young as 13 had the contraceptive devices fitted without their knowledge or consent. It was part of a deliberate campaign by the Danish government to limit the indigenous Inuit population of Greenland. Greenland was formerly a Danish colony, becoming an autonomous territory in 2009. An inquiry into the practice is due to conclude in 2025, but some women fitted with the coils in the 1960s are now in their 80s. The women seeking compensation claim that the result of the enquiry may come too late for some of the older women affected by the scandal.
