War is waged over the authorship of 'John' because both sides of such debates fight for every inch of ground as if any concession will doom their side's position. This is a sing of a lack of confidence (and understanding) from both sides. Let it be said clearly that there is no historical certainty as to who wrote or had their hand in composing 'John.' That said, this video makes the case that there are good reasons to conclude 'John' wrote the Gospel and wasn't simply the eye-witness behind it. Further, there aren't solid reasons to reject what is the only title found on MSS of John ("according to John"). I make no attempt in the video to argue that this 'John' was the son of Zebedee and the author - as Bauckham argues - could also be the Elder John of Ephesus, assuming this is a different person from the brother of James. Also, I assume a later date for the book's composition since it's common among scholars and is attested by early fathers. Some think John was written much earlier. As always, one should read Ehrman among others for alternative views. I have interviewed many non-believers for the podcast The Divide, where my good friend (an Atheist) and I (a Christian) co-interview people about the deeper issues that divide our culture. No surprise that many of the non-believing become rather severe critics of the Bible. Fair enough. Still, a number of these non-believing critics haven't, so to speak, watched the movie very 'critically.' This series aims to explain the Gospels directly to non-believing critics. To do so, the series will work on two levels: 1) The meaning of Gospel stories on their own terms 2) The grounds for why Christians take these stories seriously still today. I am a classicist by training, who teaches classical languages and Great Books in university.
