Morbid Curiosity - Episode 16 - How a Psychopath Manipulated the Police from Prison (and Almost Got Away With It) In May of 1987, the district of Scarborough, Toronto was plagued by a sudden rash of crimes and assaults. Starting on May 4th of that year, 3 women were grabbed and brutally attacked in the yards of their houses. Scarborough Police were quick to identify some similarities between the attacks, such as all of the victims being between 15 and 21 years old, horrible physical beatings paired with extreme verbal abuse, and extreme threats for no police to be called, and as such, they assumed that there was 1 suspect responsible for all of the attacks. Soon, the local newspapers caught wind of the crimes, and dubbed the suspect as the “Scarborough R***st” and would write regular cautions in their publications. The attacker would follow them home at night, prowling the bus stops, assaulting women in their yards while walking to their front door.. And these attacks would continue for another 5 years, and at LEAST 19 women would end up being victims. On September 1st, 1995, Paul received a guilty verdict and was sentenced to life in prison without parole for at least 25 years. 11 years later, in 2006, Paul confessed to his lawyer, Anthony Bryant, that he had committed at least 10 more assaults in the 80s, and Bryant forwarded that information to authorities.. However, 2 years prior to this, in 2004, the appeal and retrial motions were underway for a man named Robert Baltovich. Baltovich had been previously convicted for the 1990 homicide of his girlfriend, Elizabeth Bain, but during Baltovich’s original trial, his lawyers had suggested that the so-called Scarborough R***st was responsible for the act. Now, after Paul’s letter making it to authorities, not only is the Scarborough R***st's identity known, but he just admitted to ten more crimes. It was imperative that authorities asked Paul some very, very important questions as soon as possible. This is the interrogation of Paul Bernardo. -------- Early access for channel members!
