July 1860. The schooner Clotilda slips quietly into the dark waters of Mobile, Alabama. In her cargo hold are 110 Africans stolen from their homes and families, smuggled across the sea, and illegally imported to be sold into slavery. SURVIVING CLOTILDA is the extraordinary story of the last slave ship ever to reach America’s shores, the brash captain who built and sailed her, the wealthy white businessman whose bet set the cruel plan in motion, and the 110 men, women, and children whose resilience turned horror into hope. This short film was created in early 2021 in partnership with the Africatown Community, Clotilda Descendants Association, the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCADpro program), City of Mobile, and Visit Mobile. The short film will premier at the Savannah Film Festival in October 2021 and will be included in the Africatown Experience as tourism elements begin in the Spring of 2022 in Africatown, Mobile, AL.
