Knocked senseless by the artillery blast that tore his left leg apart, the soldier's face said it all instead. Written in marker pen on his cheek were the steps his comrades had taken to keep him alive: the time his tourniquet had been applied, and the painkillers administered. Now, as a vehicle dropped him off at a field hospital near Ukraine's Bakhmut frontlines, medics from the 81st Airmobile Brigade gave him a more expert assessment. "He's got trauma to both the leg and the head, so we've stabilised the bleeding," said Senior Sergeant Dima, 26, of the 81st Airmobile Brigade, after stuffing the patient's gaping leg wound full of clotting bandages.
