Rishi Sunak launched a diplomatic charm offensive during his dinner with Fumio Kishida by wearing the socks of the Japanese premier's favourite baseball team. Mr Sunak wore the red colours of the Hiroshima Toyo Carp as the leaders celebrated a new agreement, known as the "Hiroshima Accord", to build closer defence, security and cyber ties. Having complied with Japanese etiquette by removing his shoes, Mr Sunak gestured downwards and said: "I hope your baseball team has had a better season than my football team, who have had a very bad season." Mr Sunak was in the stands at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday to watch Southampton's relegation from the Premier League confirmed following defeat to Fulham.
