"Stop Engine..." | Russia Shows Raid On Turkish Ship En Route To Ukraine As Black Sea Tensions Flare

Russia’s Defence Ministry has released footage of the Aug. 14 raid on a cargo ship in the Black Sea. The Palau-flagged Sukru Okan vessel continued sailing to the port of Izmail after the "inspection for prohibited goods" was completed. The Russian soldiers were seen boarding a Ka-29 helicopter after checking the ship and questioning the crew. Moscow had said it fired warning shots on the vessel when its captain failed to respond to a request to stop for an inspection. This was the first time Russia fired on merchant shipping beyond Ukraine since exiting the UN and Turkey-brokered grain deal last month. Russia had warned it would treat any ships approaching Ukrainian ports as potential military vessels, prompting a similar threat from Kyiv. The Russian Defence Ministry claimed that the ship was headed to the Ukrainian port of Izmail.
