This footage was taken inside Kenya’s ransacked parliament building after violent demonstrations rocked the capital. Thousands of Kenyans have been protesting against new tax proposals in the government’s annual budget legislation. The protests brought Nairobi’s central business district to a standstill as police threw tear-gas cannisters and fired water cannons on demonstrators who advanced towards parliament buildings, where lawmakers debated the finance bill. Two protesters have so far died and hundreds have been injured. Protesters, mostly young citizens, began demonstrations on Tuesday and are demanding lawmakers vote against the new legislation. Using hashtags like #RejectFinanceBill2024 and #OccupyParliament, protesters have held demonstrations against the finance bill since 18 June 2024. The new taxes would include a 2.75% levy on income for the national medical insurance plan, as well as increased taxes on vegetable oil and fuel.
