Life Beyond Earth: The Milky Way's Habitable Planets

A recent analysis of Kepler mission data suggests the potential for hundreds of millions of habitable planets within our Milky Way galaxy. It appears one-third of the planets circling M dwarfs, small stars redder and tinier than our sun, may harbor conditions suitable for life. The University of Florida astronomers used the European Space Agency's Gaia satellite data to refine measurements of these exoplanets' orbits. Tidal heating caused by elongated orbits can make a planet too hot, evaporating its water, while planets too distant from their M dwarf star might be too cold for life. The sweet spot? A balanced orbit in the Goldilocks zone, where temperatures could allow liquid water, and therefore, life as we know it.
