George Santos won't run for re-election

U.S. Representative George Santos, who has been accused of campaign finance violations and fabricating major elements of his biography, said on Thursday he won’t seek for re-election. That comes after a House Ethics Committee report on Santos referred what it called "additional uncharged and unlawful conduct" to the Justice Department for possible prosecution. The first-term lawmaker from New York has already pleaded not guilty to a 23-count federal indictment accusing him of corruption, including 10 felony counts prosecutors added last month. On the social media site X, Santos posted “I will continue on my mission to serve my constituents up until I am allowed. I will however NOT be seeking re-election for a second term in 2024” He also called the report “biased” and a “grave miscarriage of justice”. The bipartisan ethics committee said Santos’ conduct warrants public condemnation and is beneath the dignity of the office. The report found he sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit. NBC News reported the ethics panel's Republican chairman, Michael Guest, intends to file a motion on Friday to expel Santos from Congress. Santos survived a prior expulsion vote earlier this month. The congressman's office did not immediately return a request for comment and a Department of Justice spokesperson declined to comment. Santos came under scrutiny even before taking office in January after the New York Times and other media reported he had fabricated much of his resume and life story. His fellow House Republicans held him at arm's length, but have not yet expelled him, needing him to protect their narrow 8-seat margin.
