Vladimir Putin made a surprise visit to Mariupol, a city in the Donetsk region which has been occupied by Russia since May 2022. The Russian President flew by helicopter from Crimea and then toured the city of Mariupol in his first visit to the Donbas region, as per state media TASS. TASS reported Putin’s Mariupol visit as “a working trip” to review construction and restoration work in the city. Putin “drove a vehicle along the city's streets, making stops at several locations”. This is the closest the Russian leader has been to the front lines since the invasion last February.
