Should Hijab Be Mandatory in Muslim Countries? Dr. Shabir Ally & Dr. Safiyyah Ally

#Mahsa Amini died in police custody after being charged with violating laws about modest clothing in #Iran. Women are taking to the streets in protest. Should an Islamic state enforce the hijab? Dr. Shabir Ally says the Muslim polity has a basic responsibility to command good and forbid wrong. He says Muslim woman's clothing has been much misunderstood in Islamic law, such that covering of the entire body is presented as a given, rather than recognizing that there are gradations to modesty. He says that during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, it is not so clear that the modesty standards that we consider essential were in place. Dr. Safiyyah Ally says that even if something is deemed obligatory religiously, that does not mean the state must have laws commanding it. Too many laws make people rebel, but she says a Muslim culture will naturally develop in Muslim majority countries which will guide the people in developing social mores.
