Woman Sues City of Detroit After Wrongful Arrest

On the morning of February 16, 2023, Woodruff was getting her children ready for school when police showed up at her door with a warrant for her arrest, accusing her of carjacking and robbery. Woodruff, who was 8 months pregnant at the time, was arrested and charged with robbery and carjacking. She was released that evening on a $100,000 personal bond. On March 6, the case was ultimately dropped due to insufficient evidence, according to the lawsuit. However, despite the case being dismissed, Woodruff says she suffered 'past and future emotional distress' as a result of the arrest. 'I could have lost my child,' she told the Associated Press. 'Facial recognition technology has long been known for its inherent flaws and unreliability, particularly when attempting to identify black individuals such as Porcha Woodruff,' her lawsuit writes. 'It should be understood that facial recognition alone cannot serve as probable cause for arrests.'
