Ecuador: Police involved in the assassination of presidential candidate Villavicencio? | DW News
During a live televised debate candidates vying to be the next president of Ecuador observed a minute of silence. They did so in memory of a man who should have been standing with them. Last week candidate Fernando Villavicencio was shot three times and killed during a campaign rally. His assassination shocked the country, which remains under a state of emergency. Six people have been arrested, one of them shot dead by police. The suspects include a gang leader who's already serving a prison sentence. Deadly violence has become all too common in Ecuador… and it is now very political. For more on this, we talk to former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa, who joins us from Mexico City, Mexico.
