Russia’s intervention in Syria’s civil war almost a decade ago turned the tide in Assad’s favor, but this time around his two biggest backers are stretched. Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine is consuming Russian resources while Iran finds itself weakened by Israel’s sustained attacks on Hezbollah, the Tehran-backed militants in neighboring Lebanon.
It’s been four years since the conflict in Syria reached an uneasy stalemate. The country, which borders Israel, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq and Jordan, had laid relatively dormant as the Middle East convulsed following the Oct. 7, 2023 massacre of Israelis by Hamas.

,1,French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance and the left-wing New Popular Front are weighing whether to pull candidates from the second round of the legislative election on Sunday to keep the ascendant far right out of power.
Marine Le Pen’s National Rally and its allies dominated the first round of voting Sunday, locking up 33.2% of the vote, according to interior ministry figures. The New Popular Front got 28% and Macron’s coalition got 20.8%.
Le Pen’s margin of victory was smaller than some polls had indicated. That, together with the news that mainstream parties were exploring ways to lock her group out of power, drove an initial market rally before investor optimism about the outcome began to fade.

,1,In the classic board game Catan, players are settlers racing to develop an uninhabited island. They compete to build settlements, roads and cities as quickly as possible in a universe where growth and building development are good and even necessary.
A new version of the game released this week puts players squarely in the 21st century, where that equation has become more complicated. In the world of Catan: New Energies, climate change is a known threat. Players build towns, cities and roads; trade commodities like steel and fabric; and erect power plants. The central decision facing them is whether to forge ahead with fossil fuels and urban growth, potentially precipitating disaster, or to invest in renewables, a slower and more expensive process that prolongs the game and offers other routes to victory.

,1,Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled his country is likely to resume the production of short and intermediate-range missiles in what he called a response to the US deployment of the nuclear-capable weapons in various regions of the world.
“We need to start producing these strike systems and then, based on the actual situation, make decisions about where they should be deployed if the security of our country demands it,” Putin said at a meeting of his Security Council.
The US pulled out of the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia in 2019 after it accused Moscow of not complying with the agreement. Putin said at the time that Washington’s withdrawal “created fundamental risks for everyone.”
The US has not only brought such weapons to Europe for exercises in Denmark, but also recently placed missiles in the Philippines, the Russian leader said Friday in remarks broadcast via the Kremlin’s Telegram channel.

,1,Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange will plead guilty to leaking US national security secrets and return to his home country of Australia, under a deal with the Justice Department that ends an almost 15-year battle over his prosecution.
Assange, 52, is expected to be sentenced to the more than five years he already served in a UK prison during an in-person court appearance Wednesday in Saipan, in the US Northern Mariana Islands, avoiding a potentially lengthy sentence in the US.
The plea agreement seeks to end an international fight to prosecute Assange that has been underway since sensitive US military documents, war logs and diplomatic cables were publicly leaked in 2010 and 2011, including footage of a US airstrike in Baghdad a few years earlier.

,1,Historically, when people lose confidence about their finances, they'll pull back on spending. But, increasingly, younger generations are doing the opposite, figuring their financial futures are doomed no matter what. Higher student debt loads, an increased cost of living and shifts in the labor market have made it more difficult to achieve financial success.
As such, about 28% of Americans admit to "doom spending" to cope with concerns about the economy and foreign affairs, according to Credit Karma, a personal finance company. And the rates are even higher among Millennials and Gen Z, at 43% and 35%, respectively.

,1,India’s stock market capitalization has overtaken Hong Kong’s for the first time as the South Asian nation’s growth prospects and policy reforms make it an investor darling while global capital pours out of China. #india #indian #modi #stockmarket #finance
The combined value of shares listed on Indian exchanges reached $4.33 trillion as of Monday’s close, versus $4.29 trillion for Hong Kong, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. That makes India the fourth-biggest equity market globally. Its value crossed $4 trillion for the first time on Dec. 5, with about half of that coming in the past four years.
Equities in India have been booming, thanks to a rapidly growing retail investor base and strong corporate earnings. The world’s most populous country has positioned itself as an alternative to China, attracting fresh capital from global investors and companies alike, thanks to its stable political setup and a consumption-driven economy that remains among the fastest-growing of major nations.

,1,President Joe Biden said November’s election would play a critical role in determining abortion rights and criticized restrictions on access to the procedure as “cruel” as he announced new executive actions designed to increase access to reproductive health care.
“I hear about it everywhere I go,” Biden said Monday at a White House event marking the the 51st anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which the Supreme Court overturned in 2022.
“Your voice will have a final say — this is not over,” he added.
While he didn’t mention Donald Trump by name, Biden has been sharpening attacks against the former president, who has a commanding lead in what is now a two-person race for this year’s Republican nomination. Trump’s appointees to the Supreme Court were instrumental in overturning federal abortion rights protections in a 2022 decision.

,1,Prime Minister Narendra Modi fulfilled his party’s decades-long promise by consecrating a controversial Hindu temple in northern India on Monday, marking a new milestone in the popular leader’s project of reshaping the country into a more avowedly Hindu nation.
Hailing the day as the “dawn of a new era,” Modi took center stage at the opening of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, bringing together religion, politics and spectacle in a style that the prime minister has embraced. The event, which was marked by a last-minute holiday across much of India, helps launch his campaign to lead India for a third term in elections expected within months.
As the ceremony kicked off around 12 p.m., the prime minister strode into the inner sanctuary and performed a series of rituals before a newly minted idol of the Hindu god Ram, a statue of about 4 feet (1.2 meters) covered in gold and flowers, and flanked by priests in traditional saffron robes.

,1,With just days to go before New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary, Nikki Haley is responding to the escalating attacks from former President Donald Trump - and dismissing them as proof that she threatens his bid for a third consecutive nomination.
“I’ll let people decide what he means by his attacks,” Haley told reporters in New Hampshire on Friday when asked about Trump’s false assertions that her heritage disqualifies her from the Oval Office.
“What we know is, look, he’s clearly insecure if he goes and does these temper tantrums, if he’s spending millions of dollars on TV. He’s insecure, he knows that something’s wrong.”
Trump used his social media platform Friday to mock Nikki Haley's birth name, the latest example of the former president keying on race and ethnicity to attack people of color, especially his political rivals.

,1,More than a year after a generational victory for their movement, thousands of opponents of abortion rights rallied for the 2024 DC March for Life as snow fell in the nation's capital Friday, vowing to keep fighting until abortion is eliminated. #abortion #politics
Months before a presidential election that could be heavily influenced by abortion politics, anti-abortion activists packed the National Mall carrying signs with messages such as “Life is precious.”
After listening to speeches, the crowd, braving frigid temperatures, planned to march past the U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court.

,1,Public workers in Northern Ireland are taking part in a mass one-day strike to protest over public sector pay, a move expected to bring widespread disruption to the region.
As many as 170,000 workers from 17 unions — including public transport staff, nurses, civil servants and teachers — will walk out Thursday in a coordinated action billed by unions as Northern Ireland’s biggest strike in over 50 years. Workers are calling for pay increases to bring their incomes into line with the rest of the UK.
The strike has had a huge impact on activity, with buses and trains halted, schools closed and health services disrupted. The Department of Health posted on the social media platform X that “all aspects of health and social care are impacted and there will be delays for those seeking treatment.”
The dispute has also become tangled up in the long-running political deadlock in Northern Ireland. The region hasn’t had a functioning devolved government since early 2022, when the Democratic Unionist Party withdrew from the power-sharing executive over a post-Brexit trade deal that they say undermines their position within the UK.

He also described calls for peace talks as an attempt to "force" Russia "to give up the gains" it has made. “Everyone understands that it’s impossible: both Ukraine’s ruling circles and Western elites", he said.

Zelenskiy earlier met with some of the biggest names in global finance and was greeted in heartfelt terms by JPMorgan’s Jamie Dimon as he seeks to maintain the flow of aid to his government. Elsewhere at the gathering in the Swiss Alps, some participants talked up signs of economic resilience, even as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that the world is facing the biggest threat to its stability since World War II.

,1,US President Joe Biden said he believes Yemen-based Houthi rebels that have attacked Red Sea shipping are a terrorist group.
“I think they are,” Biden said Friday when asked by reporters if he would be willing to call them a terror organization.
The Biden administration upon taking office removed a formal designation against the group over concerns that associated sanctions would worsen the humanitarian situation in Yemen, which had been wracked by years of civil war.

,1,Thousands of Yemenis in the Houthi controlled capital Sanaa demonstrated on Friday, following a wave of US-led strikes that targeted areas under the rebel group's reign. The bombardment — launched in response to a recent campaign of drone and missile attacks on commercial ships in the vital Red Sea — killed at least five people and wounded six, the Houthis said.
As the bombing lit the predawn sky over multiple sites held by the Iranian-backed rebels, it forced the world to again focus on Yemen's yearslong war, which began when the Houthis seized the country's capital.
Demonstrators were seen in footage broadcast by Al-Masirah TV, a Houthi-run satellite news channel, holding Palestinian flags, placards of the Houthis' official slogan and pictures of rebel leader Abdel Malek al-Houthi.
The Houthis have vowed fierce retaliation, further raising the prospect of a wider conflict in a region already beset by Israel's war in Gaza.

,1,South African Justice Minister Ronald Lamola outlined his country's case at the United Nations’ top court Thursday accusing Israel of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza.
South African lawyers said during the opening arguments that the latest Gaza war is part of a decadeslong oppression of the Palestinians by Israel. Israel has vehemently denied the allegations. South African lawyers asked judges to impose binding preliminary orders on Israel, including an immediate halt to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.
Minister Lamola said the Oct. 7 Hamas attack from Gaza into southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people and saw some 250 others taken hostage by militants is "no justification for any form of genocide."
"We believe that without the intervention of this court from the international community, we will see the total destruction of the Palestinian people in Gaza," he added.
Israel’s air, ground and sea assault in Gaza has killed more than 23,000 people, two-thirds of them women and children, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-ruled territory. The count does not differentiate between civilians and combatants.

,1,What are former President Donald Trump's polling numbers ahead of next week's Iowa Caucus and how much he needs to win by in Iowa to be the 2024 Republican Presidential Nominee?
The race for the White House officially begins in less than two weeks, and despite some prolonged jockeying over the election calendar, the long primary season will once again begin in Iowa with a caucus process that has served as the lead-off voting event since the 1970s.
While Iowa has played an outsize role in presidential politics for generations, the details of how the caucuses actually work can surprise and mystify even hard-core political junkies. The Republican process this year is largely unchanged, but there are significant changes to the traditional voting schedule on the Democratic side. Much of what you think you know about the Iowa caucuses may no longer be applicable in 2024.

,1,Tiger Woods’ nearly three-decade partnership with Nike Inc., which generated about $660 million for the golf legend, has come to an end.
“Over 27 years ago, I was fortunate to start a partnership with one of the most iconic brands in the world,” Woods said in a statement posted Monday on X, formerly Twitter.
Woods, now 48, signed a five-year, $40 million deal with Nike as a young phenom in 1996. A five-year, $100 million contract followed in 2001, and his next pact with the athletic-goods giant was worth $320 million over eight years. He signed his most recent deal with Nike, worth $200 million over 10 years, in 2013.

,1,Elon Musk’s reported drug use has Tesla Inc. board members facing a familiar quandary: having to decide what, if anything, to do about the chief executive subjecting directors and shareholders alike to great financial and legal risk.
The Wall Street Journal’s article describing Musk’s history of recreational drug use and ongoing consumption of ketamine is the latest in a long line of tests for a board packed with the CEO’s acolytes — several of whom agreed less than six months ago to return $735 million to settle a lawsuit alleging they had excessively compensated themselves.
Shareholders voiced dissatisfaction with the board last year over Tesla’s succession planning, and accused Musk of being distracted by his commitments to other companies. His chaotic 2022 takeover of Twitter Inc., the social media company he’s renamed X Corp., contributed to Tesla losing $672 billion in market capitalization that year.

,1,President Joe Biden kicked off his first campaign event of the year, squarely making the case to voters that his predecessor Donald Trump is a danger to democracy and shouldn’t be returned to the White House.
Biden’s remarks Friday offered some of his sharpest warnings yet about the threat he says Trump poses to the country’s institutions, a message Biden is placing at the center of his reelection bid as polls show the two barreling toward a rematch for which Americans have little appetite.

,1,Donald Trump asked the US Supreme Court to overturn a ruling that would bar him from the presidential ballot in Colorado, according to a person familiar with the filing, setting up a historic showdown over contentions that he forfeited his right to run again by inciting the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Trump is appealing a Colorado Supreme Court decision that declared him ineligible to reclaim the White House because of his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss. The decision was the first ever to invoke the Constitution’s insurrection clause against an ex-president.
The appeal marks a pivotal moment in the unprecedented national drama over Trump’s candidacy. A Supreme Court decision to grant review and back Trump could end efforts around the country to remove him from the ballot. A ruling against Trump could fuel that drive and raise new questions about the viability of his candidacy.
