RELATED: FDA says lab-grown meat is safe to eat https://tinyurl.com/49za2xwv
A proposed ruling filed from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration could mean bans on some chemical hair-smoothing and straightening products that have been linked to cancer.
The FDA has proposed a rule banning formaldehyde and other formaldehyde-releasing chemicals from being used in hair-smoothing and straightening products sold in the U.S.
The use of such chemicals has been linked to long-term health concerns, including an increased risk of cancer, according to the FDA. They can also cause short-term health risks, including sensitization reactions and breathing problems, the agency says.
Before an FDA proposal can become an official rule, the agency takes comments from the public and then may "decide to end the rulemaking process, to issue a new proposed rule, or to issue a final rule," the agency's site says.

At least five people were killed and dozens injured across Ukrainian cities early Thursday in a barrage of missile and artillery strikes that appeared to back up President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's contention at the United Nations that Russia is a "terrorist state.''
Moscow's largest fusillade in more than a month came on a day when Zelenskyy was trying to rally support in Washington while losing the military assistance of neighboring Poland amid a growing trade dispute.

Attorney General Merrick Garland struck a defiant tone Wednesday in defending the Justice Department as independent of the White House and Congress, but Republicans attacked him immediately for high-profile investigations of Hunter Biden and Donald Trump.
"Our job is to uphold the rule of law," Garland told the House Judiciary Committee in an uncharacteristically emotional statement that at times brought him close to tears as he described his family fleeing the Holocaust. “Our job is not to do what is politically convenient."
The chairman, Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, blasted Garland for the department’s “ridiculous” plea deal offered Hunter Biden, for picking a special counsel who negotiated the deal and for prosecuting Trump for allegedly mishandling classified documents.

A breakdown in negotiations late Thursday night has led to major union movement in the automotive industry.
UAW, the labor union representing hundreds of thousands of auto industry workers, called a strike when the deadline to make a new deal passed at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, leading to 13,000 members walking off the job. The "Stand Up Strike," as union leaders have called it, is set to potentially become one of the largest in the industry's history, as it is targeting not just one but all of the "Detroit Three," the largest automotive manufactures in the country.
With workers from at least three states joining the picket line, the ripple effect is expected to be felt far and wide. Here is what we know so far about the 2023 UAW strike.

For the last 14 days, Deisy Tapia was wary when going out at night. She asked people to walk her to her car. If no one was around, she’d call a friend for company over the phone. Every door and window in her apartment was locked, especially the ones that face nearby woods, where a murderer may have been lurking.
“It was nerve-wracking,” she said. “I had a lot of anxiety.”
For Tapia, 30, and her family, that fear and apprehension finally ended Wednesday morning with the arrest of Danelo Cavalcante, who escaped from a Pennsylvania prison and was the target of a massive two-week long manhunt throughout rural areas in the southeastern part of the state.
