Simply put, this is one of the most Beautiful and Important songs ever written, and it came from Christopher Cross' debut album, which won a total of 4 Grammy Awards, including 3 for this song alone, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Arrangement...
The Song is an Allegory for Seeking for God, as Sailing is one of the terms used to describe Meditation, and that journey thru Inner Space...and once you know this, ALL of the lyrics begin to make perfect sense, as everything that Christopher Cross wrote, explains the process of Meditation

Where the Wind is your Breathing, and if it is Deep and from God, then you can drop into Meditation and Sail Away...

Never-Never Land is the Parable for Heaven Upon Earth, and it is NOT far away at all, as it is WITHIN YOU when you connect to God within the Right Hemisphere of your Brain, and this is who you Truly are, Consciousness, Your SPIRIT, thus, there's no reason to PRETEND, as Meditation takes you to what is Truly Real, which is God...and all we ever needed to achieve Never, Never Land are "Just a Dream and the Wind to Carry us, and Soon we will be FREE"...as True Freedom, or Sovereignty ONLY comes from Within Yourself, that place where Only You can go, where No Man has Gone Before...
This song has stood the 'test of time' because it is TIMELESS, as its Frequency is that of Meditation, and every time we hear this track, it transforms us back to where we once belonged...HOME, which is Heaven Upon Earth...which is Serenity...
