ancient man knew full well of electricity. People often forget they observed lightning in the sky, eels shocking their pray, and static electricity. They described it differently than we do today but they knew of full well of the phenomenon. It's likely they experimented with the mechanism more than has been written and recorded but the full extent we do not know. All we can do is speculate based on what they left behind...
