As Air Force officials call for more high-tech pilot training simulators, Lockheed Martin is unveiling their plan to use off-the-shelf hardware and the same software that powers popular video games like Fortnight to make simulators that are not just more affordable, but significantly more realistic to boot. Last week, we traveled to Lockheed Martin’s Training and Logistics Solutions facility in Orlando, Florida to be among the first to get to poke around this new fighter jet training simulator that they’ve taken to calling AMAZE — short for Amorphic Appearance Zero-Projector. This system replaces the (sometimes dozens of) projectors used to power today’s military flight simulators with LED technology. This transition, Lockheed Martin officials tell us, can reduce operating costs by more than a third while occupying a significantly smaller footprint, allowing for more simulators in each training environment.
