Ulez backlash begins as vandals target 14 cameras on one road as Londoners protest

Vandals attempting to thwart Sadiq Khan’s ultra-low emission zone expansion have targeted 14 cameras in a single road. Only two of the 16 new number plate recognition cameras in Orpington, south-east London, emerged unscathed on the first day of the scheme’s expansion. The £12.50 daily charge for older polluting vehicles was widened to all 32 London boroughs on Tuesday following months of controversy, having previously ended at the North and South Circular roads. The backlash against Ulez stepped up a gear on Tuesday, with pictures showing camera cables severed, lenses covered in red paint, electronics sprayed with foam and one device blocked by a cardboard box.
