Rishi Sunak First British Prime Minister of Indian Heritage to Visit India

Rishi Sunak has just made history as the first British Prime Minister of Indian descent to visit India. He is visiting with his wife Akshata Murty, an Indian national, whose stake in her billionaire father’s IT empire is worth an estimated £690m. Sunak, who’s visiting for the G20 summit, said that he feels like "India's son-in-law”, and that India is very close to his heart. India was under British colonial rule for almost 100 years, until Indian independence in 1947. This history, and the large Indian diaspora community that lives in the UK, means that the two countries have always had a unique relationship. As both a part of that Indian diaspora community, and the leader of the UK, Sunak’s visit is historic. The British Prime Minister will hope to build bonds of friendship, and importantly make progress with a trade deal. The G20 summit, held in India this year, brings together 20 of the world’s largest economies. Russia’s war in Ukraine, and the economic damage it’s causing worldwide, will be on everyone's agenda this year.
