Washington Today (6-25-24): Israel Def Minister Gallant meets at Pentagon with Def Secretary Austin

Israel Defense Minister Yoav Gallant meets U.S. Defense Sec Lloyd Austin at the Pentagon on the Israel-Hamas war. Minister Gallant speaks of "projecting power, together; discussing areas of disagreement as friends do; and standing strong together in the face of attacks—from missile attacks to diplomatic attacks on the global stage." Secretary Austin says, “Another war between Israel and Hezbollah could easily become a regional war with terrible consequences for the Middle East. And so, diplomacy is by far the best way to prevent more escalation" Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is released from a British prison to fly to a U.S. territory in the Pacific, where he has agreed to plead guilty to a single espionage charge, with no additional jail time, to return to Australia and resolve a long legal battle related to the publication U.S. classified documents on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. U.S. House Rules Committee starts work on three national security spending bills for fiscal year 2025, for the departments of Defense, Homeland Security and State. President Joe Biden says he would veto them because the funding levels do not follow an agreement reached with House Republicans last year and policy riders on issues such as abortion, diversity, equity & inclusion, and climate. National Transportation Safety Board holds a hearing in East Palestine, Ohio on the 2023 toxic train derailment to approve their final report on the probable cause of the accident and make recommendations for train safety improvements.
