This paper is the introductory article in a whole issue on Whiteness in the sociology of sport. These sorts of issues are a treasure trove as they provide the reader a rich, go-to source on a single topic. A special issue may also signal to the reader that the field has understudied this topic and a need existed to devote greater attention via a full special issue. McDonald, M. G. (2005). Is it everyone having the same opportunity? Is it by population? Is it by race or any other measure that should equal the larger society population? –Dr. G [03:05] Equity can be more of “Let me give you the right instructions, the right equipment, the nutrition, or the training that you need” ... If it were equality, I would just be giving everyone the same thing. –Dr. G [07:20] If you’re a token person of color, or always looked at in certain ways, or there’s ways to mark you down, or you’re seen as unprofessional ... You have to have an institution and instructors that really embrace it. You need group settings in a classroom that really embrace [these differences]. –Dr. G [08:45] You get kids of color that go to juvenile and get a racist judge, and then they go straight to prison ... These are the subtle racist beliefs that exist to this day. –Dr. G [09:50] The simple definition [of white privilege] is that privilege is an unearned asset. It’s something that you did not do, but you benefitted as a result. Privilege and discrimination are somewhat opposite. –Dr. G [19:25] Diversification is spreading the wealth in a way. –Meg [20:50] Theoretical framework is what we say in academia for theories and how we see things ... You can think of it as glasses, and overtime we see the world through this white, Eurocentric lens. –Dr. G [26:17] These injustices have changed, but they haven't gone away completely. –Dr. G [33:30] Race isn’t a measure of intelligence, and we need to have more culturally diverse things. –Dr. G
