Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah broke his silence over the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza today. The leader of the Lebanese Islamist group gave a televised speech from a secret location. He praised Hamas’ attack on Israel on 7 October, in which 1,100 civilians were killed, saying it was “right, wise and just”, but he also said the attacks were “100% Palestinian”, but did not suggest Hezbollah would join Hamas in a full-scale war against Israel. Hezbollah is a Lebanese political party and militant group. Like Hamas, it is a proscribed terrorist organisation in the UK and US. Founded following the war between Israel and Lebanon in 1982, Hezbollah is closely affiliated with Iran. Hezbollah has participated in armed conflicts with Israel for decades. Despite being a Shia Muslim group, Hezbollah has often cooperated with Sunni Muslim affiliated Hamas when fighting Israel. Hezbollah is often considered to be the most heavily armed ‘non-state actor’ in the world, thanks largely to support from Iran. The group controls most Shia-majority parts of Lebanon, including the capital Beirut. Since the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas, there have been skirmishes along the Israel-Lebanon border between Israeli forces and militants. Both Hezbollah and Hamas, which also operates in Lebanon, have fired rockets and launched small-scale attacks into northern Israel. Israel has maintained a significant military presence near the Lebanese border to ward against Hezbollah. But the majority of Israel’s ground forces are now committed to attacking Hamas in Gaza to the south. Potentially leaving northern Israel more vulnerable to attacks by Hezbollah. #israel #gaza #lebanon Subscribe here: http://bit.ly/ODNsubs TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@ondemandnews Twitter: https://twitter.com/ODN Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ODN/ If you wish to purchase any of our clips for commercial use, please visit: http://www.itnproductions.co.uk/news/
