An animatronic dragon caught fire during the Fantasmic! show at Disneyland in California. Park goers were safely evacuated from the area. "Anaheim Fire & Rescue quickly responded and the fire was extinguished," the official told USA TODAY in an emailed statement. "All cast members were evacuated from Tom Sawyer Island. Due to smoke and wind, attractions near the island were safely evacuated of any guests, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time." Fantasmic! features live performers, character appearances, special effects and pyrotechnics, and the dragon sets fire to the Rivers of America for nearly 30 seconds, according to a Disneyland fact sheet. "It was a big giant fireball. Then they began pushing people out," Ryan Laux, a Los Angeles-based video producer who was watching the show near Tom Sawyer Island at the time Saturday, told the Los Angeles Times. He estimated that roughly 1,000 people were present when the fire broke out. The show first debuted in 1992, and introduced updates in 2009 and 2017. A different version of the show premiered at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida in 1998. » Subscribe to USA TODAY: http://bit.ly/1xa3XAh » Watch more on this and other topics from USA TODAY: https://bit.ly/415ZhB9 » USA TODAY delivers current local and national news, sports, entertainment, finance, technology, and more through award-winning journalism, photos, videos and VR. #disneyland #fire #usatoday
