The US says it will evacuate Americans trapped in Israel by boat on Monday. A US carrier battlegroup was deployed to the eastern Mediterranean early last week. Another three warships and a contingent of marines joined the carrier group from Kuwait on Thursday. It is likely this force would assist with any evacuation efforts on Monday. The news comes as pressure mounts on Egyptian authorities to open the Rafah crossing with Gaza. Hundreds of foreign nationals are trapped in Gaza, and many of them have made their way to the Rafah crossing in the hope Egypt with allow them to pass. They join thousands of Palestinians who have fled south following Isreal’s warning that 1.1M people in north Gaza must evacuate. A plan to open the Rafah border crossing between 12 noon and 5pm on Saturday was apparently called off, with US citizens saying they were turned away.
