The US and UK have launched a fresh wave of strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. Some of the strikes were carried out using British Typhoon jets launched from a military base in Cyprus. It’s been reported that warship and submarine-launched Tomahawk missiles were also used by the US Navy. The strikes come hours after the Houthis announced they had attacked a US-flagged cargo ship in the Red Sea. The Houthis claim they are supporting Hamas in Gaza by targeting ships supplying Israel. But British Foreign Secretary David Cameron rejected that claim, saying the attacks are indiscriminate. After the first wave of US and UK strikes earlier this month the Houthis went on to attack another 12 ships in the Red Sea. The question now is whether this latest wave of strikes on Houthi military targets will prove more effective, or if they simply risk further escalating the regional conflict.
