The experiment research was carried out at Yale University under grants from the National Science Foundation by chief investigator Stanley Milgram Phd to study obedience to authority figures. The research team measured the willingness of study participants, 40 men in the age range of 20 to 50 from a diverse range of occupations with varying levels of education, to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts conflicting with their personal conscience which include using a shock generator to punish another “participant.” The film itself is composed of behind-the-scenes footage of the experiment and shows participants grappling with the moral dilemma of continuing on with the work. Title page (0:06). Opening credits, Yale University campus (0:09). Experiment participants ushered into room with blackboard, chairs lining walls; men show up in suits and bowling hats; experimenter in lab coat explains experiment (0:16). The Teaching-Learning Process book by Nathaniel Cantor on desk (1:11). Experimenter continues explaining experiment to participants (1:15). Side panel of box that reads “Shock Generator Type ZLB” Dyson Instrument Company, Waltham Mass. - camera pans nobs, bolts on side of shock generator with sliding scale for deciding amount of shock (2:41). One participant is assigned “student,” sequestered in small room, strapped into chair and attached to shock generator, experimenter in lab coat runs through his role in experiment (3:03). Close-up of shock generator machine, montage scenes of experimenter explaining how shock machine works to different participants, goes through role of “the teacher” (5:49-9:05). Experiment begins with one of the pairs: middle aged man wearing suit, glasses plays role of “teacher;” sits in front of shock generator and reads off word pairs (9:07). Pair from beginning of film carry out experiment, grunts and moans can be heard from “learner/ student” sequestered in other room, “teacher” refuses to go on until man in other room is deemed fit to continue (9:15). Friendly reconciliation between “teacher” and “learner” after they terminate experiment (11:33). Another “teacher” - middle aged man in flannel shirt, balding, glasses - hears grunts, groans pleas of “learner” and also refuses to continue; follow up interview with “teacher” about why he laughed while hearing “learner” in pain (11:55). Middle-aged woman in beret, retro brow-line glasses laughs uncontrollably - example of emotional response when feeling tension (13:32). Interview continues with man in flannel shirt, experimenter tries to convince man that other subject did not feel pain of the shocks (14:33). Aerial view copy of report on experiment, hands flip through pages of report (16:16). Behind-the-scenes view of “learner” in sequestered room; part of experimentation team, uses tape recorder to play pre-recorded sounds of pain in correspondence with voltage levels with aid of indicator lights (16:28). Experimenter sits behind similar indicator panel, timers, event recorder machine (17:05). Another subject plays role of teacher, lasts until 345 bolts before protesting (17:35). Questionnaire given to participants, sliding scale to indicate how tense or nervous they felt, how much pain “learner” was in (19:58). Interview with another participant, discusses how much pain he thinks “learner” was in (20:15). Experimenter in white polo shirt laughs as administering shocks, protests slightly before continuing with experiment after being assured he is not responsible for any adverse results, back and forth or protest and being convinced continues as “teacher” continually increases voltage and laughing subsides, participant becomes visibly more uncomfortable (21:42-34:29). Post-experiment interview with “teacher;” out of stress starts smoking cigarette (34:31). “Learner” comes out and two men shake hands (38:35). Experimenter explains context of experiment, participants who went to the end are not necessarily sadistic - behind-the-scenes (39:18).
