Worked example problem on the conservation of linear momentum. You are encouraged to challenge and test your knowledge by first attempting the problem and then comparing your answer.

A bullet with a mass of 2 grams is launched into a block (500 g) at an initial speed v0. Find the initial speed of the bullet if the block swings to a height of h = 0.5 m. Assume that the bullet is lodged into the block i.e. perfectly inelastic collision.
