Worked example problem on the work done by different forces. You are encouraged to challenge and test your knowledge by first attempting the problem and then comparing your answer.

A block is dragged along a surface using a massless cable as indicated by the horizontal distance d shown. The tensile fore Ft exerted on the block is 2 N and the kinetic friction force is 6 N.

a) Draw a free body diagram showing all forces acting on the block
b) Determine the work done by each force if the block moves a distance of 4 m
