Washington Today (9-20-23): Spkr McCarthy hopeful GOP will get gov't funding done & avoid shutdown

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) expresses confidence that a deal can be worked out among Republicans to pass a temporary government funding bill and prevent a shutdown when current funding expires September 30th. (6) Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell says the Fed is not raising interest rates at today's meeting but suggests one more rate hike will occur this year and rates will be staying high for awhile over concerns that inflation might not be falling fast enough. Attorney General Merrick Garland testifies before the House Judiciary Committee, saying he and the Justice Department do not take orders from the President or Congress about whom to prosecute, as he gets questions about the recent indictments of Donald Trump and Hunter Biden. President Joe Biden meets with Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City, promising to raise “hard issues,” including protecting “checks and balances” in a democracy, a reference to the controversial judicial reform in Israel. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky tells the United Nations Secretary Council that's Russia's multiple vetoes of council resolutions condemning its invasion of Russia cannot stand and there should be a reform that allows a vote of all the United Nations member country to overturn those vetoes.
