Let’s talk about benfotiamine. Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble form of vitamin B1. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) is normally water-soluble, but a fat-soluble version has several advantages. Fat-soluble vitamin B1 can penetrate membranes made out of fat much easier. This is one reason why benfotiamine is so good for neurological issues. Benfotiamine helps inhibit the formation of AGEs (advanced glycation end products). AGEs can lead to a myriad of issues, but benfotiamine is a potent antioxidant-type nutrient that inhibits the formation of glycation. Benfotiamine also supports the myelin sheath and is needed for several enzymes in the mitochondria. If your cells don’t have B1, all kinds of issues can occur. Many of the complications of diabetes occur because of a lack of vitamin B1. Benfotiamine is especially important for people with diabetes. It targets inflammation and oxidative stress and supplies the B1 you need for your enzymes and mitochondria, all while inhibiting the formation of glycation. It also helps increase the number of mitochondria you have, which increases ATP (the fuel for your tissues). However, it’s also important to get on the right diet plan.
